Because of their military service, many members of the family wereeligible to appeal to the Mexican government for land grants. One of the first land grants to be issued to the family was el Rancho Milpitas. Located in Santa Clara County, Rancho Milpitas was issued in 1834 to Nicolas Berryessa II by Alcalde Pedro Chaboya, but was later reissued in 1836 to Jose Maria Alviso. Another well known rancho, el Rancho San Vicente, was issued to Jose de los Reyes in 1842 by Gov. Juan B. Alvarado. This was the main family rancho that would later be the site of many interesting events in the familys history. Other ranchos that were granted to the family include los Ranchos Cauada de Capay, Rincon de los Esteros, Mallacomes (also called Moristul y Plan de Agua Caliente), Rincon de Musalacon, Chimiles, and Las Putas. Each one of these ranchos would have had a grand adobe home and many thousands of heads of cattle.
