In order to recruit settlers and soldiers for his expedition, JuanBautista de Anza enlisted many people from the states of Sinaloa and Sonora. Nearly one quarter of all the adult colonists came from la Villa de Sinaloa, and it is here where Nicolas and his sister, Ysabel Berrelleza, joined de Anza. From Sinaloa, the colonists moved north toward el Presidio de Tubac. More settlers and colonists were recruited there, including the Peralta family which later married into the Berryessa family upon arriving in Alta California, USA. The colonists left el Presidio de Tubac on October 23, 1775 and reached el Presidio de Monterey in Alta California, USA on March 10, 1776. From there, under the leadership of Lieutenant Josu Joaquin Moraga, they proceeded on toward San Francisco.
Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, Nicolas was old enough to enlist in the Spanish military. Soon after his enlistment he was sent to Mission Santa Clara where he helped to establish the new Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe present day San Jose. Nicolas Berrelleza and Gertrudis Peralta were married in the Mission Santa Clara on October 12th, 1779, and had their first child, Maria Gabriela on November 26th, 1780, there in Santa Clara.
