Church of Christ. The river was flowing high and icey cold on the day she was baptized.

*****Born on the Traeger Ranch in Success Valley, on a hill which is barely touched by water in Lake Success when at it's highest level. A new house was built on the site during Orah's childhood, and the old house moved southwestward to become one of the barns. A milk processing shed was built next to it where cream was separated, and butter made. Milk, cream and butter was sent to Porterville to sell at regular intervals. I helped Aunt Hattie perform these functions as a teen when I had the delightful privilege of spending days and nights with her on the ranch. *****Orah attended grammar school in the one room School House built on the southwest corner of the Traeger ranch, the precursor of the Citrus South Tule School which still exists. All the Traeger kids, along with the Osborns, Wilcox's and all the neighboring children went to school there. Orah attended high school in Porterville when the school was at the north end of Main street, but she did not finish high school. Attending school required living away from home in Porterville. She was needed on the ranch and she despised being away from her family. *****As a teen Orah Traeger often babysat with the children of Oliver Osborn on the Osborn ranch. The Osborn, Traeger, Langpaap and Cosby family have continued to have close relationships for 125 years now. *****When Lilly and Anna Traeger went to Stockton to attend Normal School to become teachers, Orah went with them to keep house for them and to be their chaperones. They were there for the two or three years Lilly and Anna spent achieving their teaching credentials. While there, the girls all attended the Church of Christ. During a revival meeting in Lathrop, Orah met a silver tongued, gifted preacher who was conducting the meeting, and fell in love, and later became his wife, and accompanied him to Honolulu in the 1920's as a missionary wife for the Church of Christ. Their original plans had been to go to rural Bulawayo, Rhodesia, Africa in the same capacity, but these plans were frustrated by U.S. state department rules required by World War I activity in Africa. (see Max Langpaap notes). (I have the Langpaap family's passports giving them permission to go to Rhodesia, and the letter rescinding this permission). *****After Max and Orah returned to Porterville 1930, they were unable to return to their mission work in Honolulu because the depression forced all of their supporting congregations to withdraw support. Max tried to preach in California, but could not establish himself in a supporting congregation, and the life of a traveling preacher, living off the collection plate proved impossible, so the family settled into the old Kessing family home (built in 1910, purchased by Max and Orah for $600.00 in about 1931) on Kessing and H streets, and started farming asparagus and corn, tomatoes, squash, etc to sell locally and to the markets in Los Angeles. They farmed on the twenty acres Orah had inherited from her father on the northwest corner of Olive Street and Newcomb Ave. During the winter, Orah joined Hattie at the orange packing sheds near Bartlett Park, grading and packing oranges, but in the spring, she worked with Max, grading and packing asparagus on their own farm. Hard work!!!!
