<<+>> Following their marriage, the newlyweds traveled over the Ridge Route to spend their first night of their marriage in San Fernando. When they returned to the Porterville area, they stayed with Aunt Alta Cosby, George's sister-in-law, trying to find work. Dad was so young, and so young looking that he was told, 'we don't hire kids' and 'you should be in school', etc. He finally found asparagus cutting work at 25 cents and hour as his first job. For some time, the newly weds stayed with Alta, her husband Wesley, being at sea in the Navy. Uncle Wes was assigned to the USS Lexington, America's first aircraft carrier, and spent part of his Naval career in the fruitless search for Amelia Earhart. Uncle Wes was discharged from the Navy shortly before Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was not reactivated.o the property the family owned on the east side of the Island where they hoped to build a beach house someday. {Uncle David corrects this memory, noting that grandpa did not learn to drive til the family returned to California, and the family could take a bus over Pali, or a train around the southeast part of Oahu to the beach property}.k the first day, but OK after that. When asked if she told the class about living in Hawaii, she said she didn't think she said anything. She was too shy.ily lived across Olive Street in a facility called 'Bressy Camp'. For a time, Max Langpaap's family of 5 and Aunt Hattie stayed there in a one room cabin. Soon, the family rented a house on Kessing Ave, next door to the house they were later to buy.ids'. The depression was still in force. Mom and Dad lived in several places in the first 2-3 years of marriage, and spent several weeks or more living with the Langpaap's and later, when they returned from Cleveland, with Grandpa and Grandma Cosby who had moved into a rented house on Kessing, just down the street from the Langpaap's house.eyer house on 'F' Street, where I was born, Mom answered 'We rented the biggest part of the house'. Soon after my birth, they were asked to leave, because the Meyer's had not intended to rent to anyone with a baby. They were staying in the house too, and did not appreciate my crying. Richard Cosbyrd Penrod, Mom and Dad's best friends growing up, and another teen aged couple by the last name Wolf. Shorty after I was born, Loie gave birth to Janice Penrod, and Mrs. Wolf gave birth to Jaydene.t Chaste Tree Park, in Visalia, on Monday, June 19, 2007. She was the widow of George Austin Cosby to whom she had been married for 65 years when he died in 2003. She was 86 years old.wn to her family and friends as 'Bunny', was born in Santa Rosa, CA on April 8, 1921. Her parents, Max and Orah Langpaap, were committed to be missionaries for the Church of Christ, and were to leave for Honolulu in three months. Dorothy was raised in Honolulu for the first eight and a half years of her life, then brought to Porterville, her mother's and maternal grandmother?s birthplace, where she lived for most of the rest of her life. Her mother?s Traeger family arrived in Porterville in the early 1870's, and her mother's Lewis relatives arrived in the Porterville area in the mid 1850's. Descendants of each of these families still live here. Her father, Max Langpaap, was born and raised in Tombstone, AZ, where his German immigrant parents ranched, operated restaurants and bakery's and mined for silver. He went to San Francisco in 1903, and survived the 1906 earthquake and fire.n the third grade, she met her lifelong friend Loie Morgan {Penrod}. At Porterville high school, she met her future husband, George Cosby. They were married on December 31, 1937. She gave birth to four children, Richard, Ellen, David and Gary {stillborn--rH factor}. During the War, George served in the Navy in the South Pacific and Dorothy mothered her children beautifully in Wilmington, CA, alone. Following the war, the family returned to Porterville. Dorothy, who had not finished high school, joined her eldest son, Richard, in high school and they graduated together in the class of 1956. The class had its 50th reunion last fall. Following her graduation, she joined the staff at Porterville State Hospital where she worked for nearly 30 years before retiring.ere principally devoted to church work their entire lives. She also loved to travel, and saw much of the United States and some of Canada in her travels. She also spent a month in Europe in the 1960's, visiting 11 countries during that time. She loved the Sierras and spent much time at the home of Clyde and Juanita Osborn near Mt. Denison in our local mountains, and as much time as she could near Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe where her son has a cabin., sons Richard {Charlotte}, David {Gail}, grandchildren Lisa Marie Cosby, Kirsten Joan Cosby Damiano {Todd}, Lisa Diane Wills Byrd {Josh}, Nathan Wills, Robin Cosby, Dugan Cosby, and great grandchildren, Ashley, Sarah, Austin and Tyler Byrd, Kathrynne Wills and Jamison Damiano.-7 PM.
