"On this 5th day of January, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty-three ...Constantine Schlappi, aged 44 years, a resident of the Town of Weston county of Wood State of Ohio ... enrolled on the 12 day of August, 1861 in company C ofthe 8th regiment of Mich. Vol. command by Col Fenton, and was honorable discharged at Blains X Roads Tenns on the 29 day of Dec, 1863; that his personal description is as follows: Age, 44, height, 5 feet 8 inches; complexion, Light; hair,Auburn; eyes, Grey. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Wilmington Island, in teh State of Georgea on or about the 16th day of Apr, 1862 he received a gun shot wound in his left leg, cutting the cords of the leg so as to cause weakenings of hip and ankle. That he was treated in hospital as follows: on Port Royal Island S. Carolina being known as the General Hospital located at Hilton Head in said State.

"I treated Constantine Schlappi for better than a year. He first presented shattered nerves & nervous prostration progressing the nerves gave way producing a progressive paralysis which resulted in his death -
I became acquainted with him [Constatine] 4 years ago, he then lived at Hills Corners.
The immediate cause of death was from heart failure result of the nervous prostration. The nervous was the result of a malarial condition with chronic diarrhea which he claimed to have contracted in the army."
