Harold Meinders, 76, of Dumont, died on December 7, 2001 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City East Campus of natural causes.

Harold was born December 14, 1924 near Austinville, to Harry and Mattie (Nolte) Meinders. He was baptized in 1925 at the Washington Reformed Church and made his Confession of Faith in 1939 at the Dumont Reformed Church. He attended country schools through 7th grade and graduated from Dumont Community High School in 1943. He was drafted into the Marines on March 3, 1944 and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was released in August of 1946 and worked in the Kesley Elevator for his uncle and in the Dumont Elevator. On November 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Frances Kuper at the Congregational Church in Osage. Shortly after their marriage Harold had the opportunity to rent a farm south of Dumont and continued to farm in the Dumont and Osage area for 20 years until they purchased Meinders Variety in Dumont in 1971. While Frances worked in the store, Harold operated a backhoe business. He also built their home in which they currently reside. Harold was a "jack of all trades". Some of his many jobs were: gas truck driver, bus driver, milk truck driver, sexton of Dumont Cemetery, grave digger and lawn keeper. In previous years he also was employed at United Hydraulics, Winnebago Industries, and Harken Lumber Co. in Dumont. Carpentry was his love. His children and grandchildren enjoy many of the benefits of this gift and talent, as do many of the members of this community. He also had the gift of gab. He loved to visit and enjoyed many hours with friends and family. You never went anywhere with Harold, but what he didn't run into someone he knew. And, if by chance, he couldn't find someone he knew, you can bet by the time he left, that he had made at least one new friend. Harold was a real servant. He loved working with and helping people. In fact, he is best known in Dumont as 'The Ladies Man", as he was always on call for the widows who needed a man's touch. He was always the person to call no matter what you needed help with. It might be plumbing, carpentry, trimming, mowing, digging, fixing, building, shingling, laying carpet...he was always willing to help.

He was currently a member of the Dumont Reformed Church; President of the Cemetary Association; Elder and Deacon at the Dumont Reformed Church, where he also had served as treasurer and choir member; member of the American Legion for 54 years; and a Lions Club member. He served as a board member when the Franklin General Hospital was built; member of the medical search committee on the Dumont Development Board for a physician in Dumont, who took the opportunity to go to Roanoke, Virginia to help relocate the doctor; and served as a volunteer fireman in Dumont.

Living family members include his wife, Frances of Dumont, six children: LaDonna (Larry) Estal of Reeds Spring, Missouri, Keith (Becky Jo) Meinders of Osage, Steve (Sue) Meinders of Kearney, Missouri, Marcia (Randy) Lunn of St. Louis, Missouri, Verla (Dale) Pecha of Dumont, Mari (Kirk) Petersen of Hampton; four sisters: Deona (Albert) Dohlman of Dumont, Edna (George) Reiners of Dumont, Phyllis ("Toot") Card of Hampton, and MaryLou (Duane) Seibert of Rudd; fourteen grandchildren: Jason (Tina) Estal of O'Fallon, Missouri, Matthew (Katie) Estal of O'Fallon, Missouri, Lorinda (Kenny) Fleetwood of Republic, Missouri, Shanlyn Meinders (and fiance, Adam Doll), Judd Meinders, Wendy, Joshua, and Rachel Pecha, Jared and Alex Meinders, Dustin and Kelsey Schwab, and Kendra and Hannah Petersen; and one great grandson, Caleb Estal, who was just born on October 6; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Wilma Maifield; and two children: Lynn Harold and Julie Ann.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 10, 2001 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accom-panying the duet of Alvin and Diane Nolte. Pallbearers were Alex Meinders, Josh Pecha, Jason Estal, Matthew Estal, Judd Meinders, Jared Meinders and Dustin Schwab. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.
