Biography
No records have been found supporting a surname, birth, parents or birth place. She was called Sarah in James's will. James was born about 1606. It is estimated their first child was born in 1631. Giving Sarah an approximated birth between 1606 and 1613.

Not Elson: Many genealogies claim that Sarah, wife of James Ensign, was the daughter of Abraham Elson and his wife Rebecca. Sarah dtr of Abraham and Rebecca was born 17 Mar 1643/4,[1] making her a contemporary of James Ensign's children. It would be impossible for her to be his wife, the mother of his children as seen in Sarah's will.
Possible origin of Elson: In 1666, Nathaniel Dickinson wrote a letter to his friend Samuel Boarman, requesting that Samuel pay Goodman Ensigne of Hartford £5 16s, so that he wouldn't be sued. "you know he hath Received four pound four Shillings already of Sarah Elson's portion and If he be payd five punds sixten shiling more it will make 10-21 of her portion which will be the full of my part ... when paid I desire you to take an aquitance from Sarah Elson & her husband ..." He mentioned also Samuel Smith who promised to pay Sarah Elson also[2][3] Nathaniel Dickinson and Samuel Smith had been put in charge of the real property from the estate of Abraham Elson, for the benefit of the children. Sarah in 1666 would be 22 and from the text had a husband. It would seem that Ensign was facilitating the collection of estate owed, but he was not the unnamed husband.
Speculatively -- If Sarah (____) Ensign, the wife, was the sister of Abraham Elson, then Sarah Elson, dtr of Abraham, would be the niece of James Ensign.
Not Nelson - nor is it the Ancestry caused typo Nelson. Ancestry mistakenly titled a book "Record of the descendants of James Ensign and his wife Sarah Nelson..." (instead of Elson)
It is estimated that Sarah married James in England, about 1630, before their migration to Newe Towne (Cambridge), Massachusetts, and subsequent move to Hartford, Connecticut. Wives' names weren't placed on the "Founders Monument", but Sarah was certainly a Founder of Hartford as was her husband.

James and Sarah were founding members of the 2nd Church of Christ Hartford, joining in full communion, 17 Feb 1669/70, under the pastorate of Rev. John Whiting. [4]

She survived her husband James but died before 29 May 1676, the date of her estate inventory.
