Biography
James was christened June 1, 1606 in Rye, Sussex, England. James immigrated in 1634 and was made a freeman in . James's estate was probated March 2, 1670/1He was buried in Nov 1670 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. James married Sarah Nelson. Sarah was born about 1611 in England. In Governor Winthrop's "History of New England", under the date of 14 August 1632, is this entry: "The Braintree company by order of court, removed to Newtown." This was Rev. Hooker's Company. They were called the Braintree Company because they came from Braintree, England a town about forty miles from London. Rev. Hooker and his congregation removed to Hartford CT I May 1636. Many of these settlers became the founding fathers of Hartford CT. James Ensign was one of the original proprietors he was allotted twenty-four acres on the south side of the town. He was prominent in church and town affairs, was chosen constable for several years, and was chimney viewer, surveyor, and townsman. Children: 1.Sarah Ensign was born in 1630/1633. James was connected with the Thomas Ensing family of Rye, Sussex based on the rarity of the name, the fact that the James in England disappears from English records at the time that James Ensign emerges in Hartford, the fact that James of Hartford and Thomas of Scituate were reported to be brothers (the Thomas Ensing in Rye had sons named Thomas and James), the fact that the Ensing family in Rye were staunch Puritans as was James in Hartford.
****
James Ensign was married to a Sarah Nelson? Notes have shown that Sarah Elson daughter Of Abraham and Rebecca Elson was married to a William Hills. There is a possibility that Sarah James wife might have been an aunt to Sarah Elson. In the 1600's it seems that everybody knew each other. So many people took that since Sarah was James wife she must be the daughter of Abraham Elson when her birthdate is about 1612 and Sarah Elson was about 1643. from Ensigns in America : with allied families : record of the descendants of James Ensign and wife Sarah Elson, 1634 - 1939 - 1960
