John was the second of seven children born to Thomas and Margery (Easton) Ingersoll. John was born in England and immigrated to America (Salem, Mass.), at the age of 14, with his older brother, Richard. He later moved to Hartford, Conn. He was married to: (1) Dorothy (Lord) in 1651 and they had three daughters: Hannah, Dorothy and Margery 'Mary'. He next married (2) Abigail (Bascom) in 1657 and they had five children: Abigail, Sarah, Abijah, Hester and Thomas. Later he married (3) Mary (Hunt) in 1668 and they had seven children: John, Abel, Ebenezer, Joseph, Mary, Benjamin and Jonathan.
John Ingersoll was in Hartford, Connecticut by 1651, where he married Dorothy Lord, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Lord. In 1655, John removed to Northampton, Massachusetts where his wife died, January, 1656.
On 12 December 1657, John married for his second wife, Abigail Bascom, daughter of Thomas Bascom, one of the first settlers of Windsor, Connecticut, but who resided later at Northampton.
In 1666, John removed with his family to Woronoco, which was the Indian name by which Westfield, Massachusetts was then known. In April, 1666, his wife Abigail died. During the following year he married for his third wife, Mary Hunt, a daughter of John and Mary (Webster) Hunt
In the year 1666 land was granted to John Ingersoll and others. In 1669 an additional grant was given to the first one of 20 acres. In 1679 he was one of the "Seven Pillars" or "Foundation Men" who united to form the church at Westfield.
John Ingersoll died in Westfield, 3 September 1684 and is buried in the old Westfield Cemetery. His widow died 18 August,1690
The clue to his English origin and his parents is found in his public relation of religious experience at Westfield, Massachusetts in which he stated "The first time, to my rememberance, that God met with me was by a Sermon I heard at Darby in old England upon Ps 15.1,2, when I was about 18 years old..."
