Harvey Clayton Gunderson, son of Herman and Christine (Knutson) Gunderson, was born April 14, 1919 in Centerville, SD. He graduated from Hurley (SD) High School in 1937.
Harvey entered the U.S. Army on February 4, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN. He was united in marriage with Theresa Wieman on August 14, 1943 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, McDill Field, Tampa, FL where he was stationed for two years. He served in the European Theater from April of 1945 to January 1946. He was honorably discharged on January 11, 1946 at Camp McCoy, WI.
He returned to South Dakota where the couple farmed in the Parker-Marion area for 26 years. In 1971, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Harvey was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. He retired in 1985. Harvey and Theresa enjoyed traveling and spent several winters in Mission and McAllen, TX. They moved to the Meadowstone Apartments in 2002. In August of 2003 Harvey became a resident at Good Samaritan Village where he resided until his death.
Harvey was a member of St. John American Lutheran Church and was active in the St. John Retirees group. He was also a member of Parker American Legion Post 30.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, Theresa; three children, Keith Gunderson and his wife, Mary, Canton, SD, LeRoy Gunderson and his wife, Kathy, Watertown, SD, Judy Kirkman and her husband, Bob, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Greg Gunderson and his wife, Christa and Kate Gunderson, Holly Gunderson and Beth Gunderson, Katrina Brown and her husband, Will and Patrick Kirkman; five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Camille Gunderson, Joseph Gunderson Jones, Katherine and Will Brown; three sisters, Kathryn Wieman and her husband, Earl, Lois Kraemer, Eunice Duerksen and her husband, Bob, all of Marion, SD; two brothers, Jerome Gunderson and his wife, Dollie, Sioux Falls, SD, Harold Gunderson and his wife, Shirley, Harlingen, TX; two sisters-in-law, Mary Gunderson, Parker, SD, Helen Gunderson, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marvin, Russell and Lee.
FUNERAL SERVICE~ Wednesday, November 1, 2006, St. John American Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD; Reverend Paul Matchan and Reverend Lee Stadem, Officiating.
INTERMENT~ Rosehill Cemetery, Parker, SD; Military Rites by the Parker Veterans of Foreign Wars
