"Final Rites Held For Mrs. F. Elwood
Mary Elwood, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Schaefer, was born December 8, 1886 at Lincoln, Illinois. She was baptized on April 29, 1887 at Lincoln, Illinois by Rev. John G. Ade.
She moved from Illinois to Winnebago County, Iowa in 1896, where she grew to womanhood.
On December 19, 1906 [fortasse 1908] she was united in marriage to Frank Elwood of Buffalo Center, Iowa. To this union 7 children were born - Homer of Buffalo Center Neil, Thompson, Iowa, Floyd (Bud) at home, Robert, Joice, Iowa, Dorothy (Mrs. Emil Kallestad) Rake, Iowa, Gerald, Amery Wisconsin, Verle, Thompson, Iowa.
She had been in failing health the past year, but became seriously ill in March. On May 9, she was taken to the Park Hospital in Mason City for observation and returned home May 14. She remained at home, but grew steadily weaker and on July 19, she entered the Buffalo Center Hospital, where she passed away on Sunday, July 22 at 4:19 p.m. at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 14 days.
She was a member of the Ellis Point Methodist church, where she was a faithful worker in the W.S.C.S. and other church activities.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Frank, and 7 children, 21 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, four sisters and one brother - Mrs. Heyo Berschman of Thompson, Mrs. Frank Banta, Mrs. Nels Swanson, Mrs. Henry Nerdig and Louis Schaefer all of Buffalo Center. Also other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brother in infancy and a daughter-in-law, who passed away in February.
A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is still.
A place is vacant in our home that never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled the gift his love has given.
And though the body slumbers here, Her soul is save in heaven.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 25 from Winter Funeral Home followed by services at the Methodist church with Pastor Mastin and Pastor Shreve officiating.
Solo - "Ivory places [sic] [might this word be palaces?]" by Mrs. August Nerdig.
Ladies quartette "Beyond the Sunset." Both were accompanied by Mrs. Calvin Lundberg at the organ.
Pallbearers were her six sons: Homer Elwood, Neil Elwood, Floyd (Bud) Elwood, Robert Elwood, Gerald Elwood and Verle Elwood.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetry at Buffalo Center.
