Jennie Smidt, daughter of John Abels, Sr., and Johanna Meyering was born April 26, 1916 a Kamrar, Iowa. Her parents moved to Buffalo Center when she was 3 or 4 years old and she has lived here since.
She was united in marriage to John Smidt on January 15, 1937 at Buffalo Center, Iowa. To this union were born five children Jo Ann, Richard, Alvin, Mary and Sandra. ..." <>

Jolm M. Smidt, 79, of Buffalo Center formerly of Forest City, died Sunday, May 15, 1994 at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, May 18 at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational Church inBuffalo Center with Rev. Jim Sullivan officiating. Internment was in Olena Mound Cemetery with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Music was provided by Gloriann Brue as organist. Rosemary Brackey and Emily Silber were vocalists and Jayme Sullivan was the flutist. Casketbearers were Alan Hejna, Michael Hejna, Chad Smidt, Troy Smidt, Trent Smidt, Scott James andAndy Walker.
Honorary casketbearers were Sonja James, Amy Jo Penning, Kelly Smidt and Jennifer Teig.
John M. Smidt was bom May 18, 1914 to Mendert and Christina Smidt at Titonka. In 1920 he moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Bancroft, South Dakota. After the death of his parents in 1920. John relumed to Iowa and lived withhis Aunt and Uncle Boyd Pannkuk in Titonka.
On January 15, 1937 he married Jennie Abels at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. They had a double wedding ceremony with Jennie's brother, Joe, and wife Cora. During their married years they lived in Iowa, then moved toSouth Dakota for a couple years, and then back to Iowa. In the fall of 1956 they moved back to Buffalo Center. He fanned and also drove school bus and semi-trucks.
John is survived by six children: JoAnn Hejna and husband. Jerry, of Ventura; Richard Smidt and wife, Marsha, of Longmont, Colorado; Alvin Smidt and wife, Peggy, of Buffalo Center; Mary James and Joe Badje of Rake; Saudi Walker andhusband, Dennis, of Vancouver, Washington; Kathy Smidt of Buffalo Center, also by 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Janssen of Buffalo Center and Ann Huisman and husband, Fred of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and onebrother, Mike Smidt of Huron, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jennie on August 20, 1971; two sisters, Elsie Janssen and Berdena Limborg, andd by a grand-daughter, Janie Marie James." <>
