John (Jan) was born on October 16, 1899. When John was 14 years old, he quit school and started working for farmers in the Campen, Germany area. ... Around 1917 John started delivering horses for the German army during World War I. ...

In 1920 John married Neelke Adam de Vries. Their first child, Annie, was born on January 21, 1921. In June of 1923 their second childm, Neele, was born. On June 9, 1923 Neelke died at the age of 24 from complications from the birth ofNeele. Neele, who was born with a hole in his spine, died on September 14, 1923. ... ... John arrived in the U.S. in 1924. ..."

"... John married Katie Winter, the daughter of John and Grace (Meyer) Winter on February 2, 1927. In 1928 they moved to a farm by Thompson, Iowa. The farm was seven miles east and two miles north of Buffalo Center. ... In 1944 John and Kate bought and moved to a farm two miles south and two and three-quarter miles west of Buffalo Center. ... They lived there until 1960 when they purchased a home in Buffalo Center. In February of 1979 Kate became illand died of cancer on April 11, 1979.
