'Their [Orville & Gertie Buffington] daughter Alma married Stephen Tjaden (deceased). They farmed in the Woden [IA] area until Stephen's death, then Alma went back to teaching school. She taught for seven years in country schools; atthat time they were discontinued and Alma went to the Thompson School System to teach until her retirement. This union was blessed with one son, Glenn, who lives in Webster City, Iowa. Alma makes her home here in Buffalo Center.'

'Alma (Sleper) Tjaden has lived in Buffalo Center since 1948. During those years she taught in a rural school in Bingham Township for three years, then in a rural school in Grant Township for four years, and finally in the ThompsonElementary School for 20 years. Alma retired from teaching in the spring of 1974. With seven years of teaching prior to her marriage, Alma dedicated 34 years to the education of young children.'

'Alma continues to reside in her home at 116 Second Street N W in Buffalo Center where she has resided since 1950. She has been active in the First Reformed Church of Buffalo Center as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for over 20years. She belonged to various women's church groups, and was previously active in the Buffalo Center Senior Citizens Club.'
'Alma was born April 29, 1910, the daughter of John A. and Maggie (Heitland) Sleper. Their home being in Titonka, Alma attended school in Titonka until the family moved into the Buffalo Center school district during her sophomore year.She graduated with the Class of 1928. Alma's father was born SEptember 16, 1878 in Germany and came with his paarents to the U.S.A. on February 2, 1884. He passed away on April 5, 1971. Alma's mother was born on December 6, 1887 inGermany and passed away on April 4, 1970. John and Maggie were married on December 28, 1905 and were able to celebrate 65 years of marriage.'

'Alma Tjaden, 85
Services for Alma Tjaden, 85, were held Saturday, February 17 at 1:00 p.m. at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Rev. William Peake officiated. Interment was in Bingham Township Cemetery, rural Woden. Winter Funeral Home, BuffaloCenter, was in charge of arrangements.
Casketbearers were George Boehm, Gene Brass, Lyle Hippen, Harold Kettwick, Andy Winter and George Winter. Music was provided by Marlene Krul, organist, and a quartet, Donald and Nancy Miller and Andy and Mitzi Meredith. The congregationsang, 'He Leadeth Me'.
Alma Tjaden was born in Titonka April 29, 1910 to John A. and Maggie (Heitland) Sleper. She was the third of six children. Alma attended school in Titonka until moving to the Buffalo Center school district during her sophomore year.She graduated from Buffalo Center High School with the class of 1928.
She completed Normal Training in the summer of 1928, teaching for seven years prior to being married. She returned to teaching in 1948 to a rural school in Bingham Township, followed by four years in a rural school in Grant Twonship, andfinally in the Thompson Elementary School for twenty years.
During this time she graduated from Mason City Junior College by completing correspondence and night classes. Alma retired from teaching in the spring of 1974 and remained active in the Winnebago County Retired Teacher's Association.She devoted a total of 34 years to the education of young people in the public schools.
Alma was united in marriage to Stephen Henry Tjaden in her parent's home in rural Kossuth County April 3, 1936. They farmed south and east of Woden for ten years. Stephen passed away March 31, 1946. She moved into Buffalo Center in1947.
She was active in First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, teaching Sunday School and Bible School for almost 30 years. Alma belonged to various women's church groups, was active in the Buffalo Center Senior Citizen's Center and helped inorganizing the congregate meals program.
Alma became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home in August of 1992. She passed away Wednesday, February 14, 1996 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
She leaves to mourn a son, Glenn Stephen Tjaden and his wife, Mary, of Webster City; two grand-daughters, Nicole Ann Chamness and husband Gary, Blairsburg; Mary Robin Olson, Des Moines; her great-grandson, Stephen Leonard Chamness; abrother, Albert 'Bo' Sleper, Titonka; a sister, Harriet Rippentrop, Titonka; sister-in-law, Ona Sleper, Maxwell and uncle Albert Sleper and his wife, Ruby, of Buffalo Center.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Stephen; two sister, Gertie Buffington and Grace Neeland and one brother, Henry 'Hank' Sleper.'
