Speers died at his home at 115 North Melvin street in this city at 11:40 o'clock last Monday morning, Dec 31, after an illness from pneumonia which had lasted only a few days. His age was 62 years, 1 month and 10 days. Hissudden death saddened the community. He had been sick only three or four days, and many of his friends had not heard of his illness.
Mr. Speers was one of Gibson City's most popular citizens, having grown to manhood, married and raised a large family here. In his services to the city as an alderman of the city council for several terms he had manifested signal abilityand integrity. Most of his life was spent in the carpentering and building trade. In recent years he had acted in the capacity of salesman in the Hager lumber yard, where his knowledge of lumber and building had proved especiallyvaluable.
Mr. Speers is survived by his wife and eight children, as follows: Mrs. Rolla Huxtable, Lulu Speers, Olive Speers, Earl Speers, Evan Speers and Mrs. Ed. Clements of Gibson City; Lucian Speers of Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Glenn Preston of Aurora,Colo. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Sherman LeValley, Mrs. Harry Wilson and Earl Speers of Gibson City; Mrs. Roy Hull of Decatur, Ill.; Miss Odessa Speers of Gardner, Ill.; and Mrs. Wm. Carver of Hebron,Ind. Funeral services were held at the home at 3:00 o'clock on Wednesday, Jan. 2, in charge of Rev. R. M. Luedde, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was in Gibson City cemetery.
