Clarence was born on October 15, 1909 to Vino and Dena (Penning) Heitland who lived southwest of Buffalo Center. He was the third child with an older brother Anton of Rush City, Minnesota; an older sister Mae (Mrs. Ralph Smith) of Woden,Iowa (deceased) and Alice (Mrs. Joe Cline) of Woden (deceased). ... Gladys Aukes, daughter of Edze and Selma Aukes, lived south of Buffalo Center and attended Grant No. 4 school also. She spent her teen years helping with the household chores on her parents' farm and helping neighbors. ... On October 15, 1935 Clarence and Gladys were married at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center wch they have always attended. ..."

Funeral service for Gladys Heitland, 88, of Buffalo Center, was held Monday at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Dave Langer officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery Buffalo Center, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Gladys Bertha Heitland was born on April 5, 1915, to Edze and Selma'' (Daniels) Aukes in rural Woden, Iowa. She attended country school in Grant Township.
Gladys attended Sunday School at the country school and then joined the Congregational Church in 1933, where she was an active member and was baptized as an adult.
On October 15, 1935, Gladys was united in marriage with Clarence Heitland at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. They resided on a farm north of Buffalo Center for 4 years, then moved northeast of Buffalo Center where they lived until 1976 when they retired to their new home they had built in Buffalo Center.
Gladys enjoyed time spent with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making quilts, crocheting, sewing proj-ects, gardening and playing games with her friends. For many years she provided transportation for friends needing a ride and delivering meals to shut-ins. She worked with Women's Fellowship Missionary Work Group and was a willing helper at the Senior Center.
Gladys became a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in January of 2002. On Thursday, July 03, 2003, Gladys passed away at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Leona and her husband Carroll Van Hove of Buffalo Center; Gerald (Jerry) and his wife Laura Heitland of Clear Lake; Donna and her hus-band Dale Bredeson of Estherville; Judy Hanson of Trenton, Missouri; and Dale and his wife Carol Heitland of Forest City; 12 grandchildren: Bonnie Wilson, Pam Pitkin, Lisa Arians, Jason Heitland, Daniel Bredeson, Douglas Bredeson, Pat Hanson, Sheri Stufflebean, Dulcie Price, Tim Hanson, Kendra Amundson, and Kayla Meredith; twenty great-grand- children, one sister Clara and her husband Herb Klasse, one brother Walter and his wife Great Aukes, and one sister-in-law Margaret Heitland.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, who died in 1979, one granddaughter Cindy Kotewa, and two infant grandsons.
Gladys will always be remembered for her smile and caring ways for family and friends.
