"Albert Boekelman February 8, 1914 - November 16, 1997 Algona - Albert Boekelman, former longtime Algona Police Chief, died Sunday, Nov. 16 (1997), in the North Iowa Mercy Health Center at Mason City.
Funeral Mass for him will be concelebrated by Bishop Lawrence Soens of Sioux City, Albert's son, Father Tim Boekelman of Moorland, IA; and Father Steve Brodersen at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, in St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Burial is in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Hagg-Turner Post 90 of the American Legion and VFW Post 2541. The Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers are Mike Boekelman, Stephan Boekelman, Jeremy Boekelman, Andy Boekelman, Pete Boekelman, and Ron Wellner.
A son of Andrew and Dena Sleper Boekelman, Albert was born February 8, 1914, at Buffalo Center. He attended country schools in the Buffalo Center and titonka areas. Al farmed with his parents before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Heserved with the military during World War II and following his discharge, returned to Algona where he began to work for the Algona Police Department.
Al was married to Merilyn Burns at Algona Nov. 29, 1947.
He was a patrol officer with the Algona Police Department for 10 years and became Chief of Police in 1955. He held that position until retiring in 1970. Later, Al worked for the State Liquor Enforcement Commission. He started AlgonaSecurities, then sold that business and retired in 1985.
Al and Merilyn spend their summers at Okoboji. He enjoyed golfind and postol shooting. He was a member of St. Cecelia's Church where he served as a greeter and usher, a member of Hagg-Turner Post 90 of the American Legion, and formerlya member of Golden K Kiwanis.
His wife, Merilyn, died Feb. 1, 1997.
Surviving are a daughter and three sons, Janet Waechter, Algona; Father Tim Boekelman, Moorland, IA; Mike Boekelman, Holdrege, NE; and Stephan Boekelman, Minneapolis. There are five grandchildren.
Two sisters and a brother also survive. Gertrude Winter and Rozella Hagen, both of Algona; Harry and Florence Boekelman, Brookings, SD. His wife, Merilyn; a daughter, Susan; parents and a sister, Henrietta Boekelman, are deceased."
