Walter Hassebroek was born June 13, 1897 at George, Iowa to Arend and Alice Hassebroek. He married Gertje Luitjens on July 30, 1918. She was born December 23, 1896 at Ashton, Iowa. They grew up and attended school in Lyons county, Iowa. In August, 1918, they moved to Marshall county to make their home. They farmed in the Spain and Amherst area and were active members of the Zion Reformed Church at Amherst. Gertje passed away March 10, 1951 and Walter died May 1 1,1974. To this union seven children were born. The following is a summary of their families..
Arend married Helen Benda. He was a member of the armed serv-ice in World War II. He farmed in Marshall county until 1968 when they moved to Aberdeen where he was employed at Safeguard. Their children are Alvin, Minneapolis, Minn.; Dwight (wife Wilma, chil-dren, Teresa, Dean and Jennifer) of Minneapolis, Minn.; Ronald, Aberdeen (employed at Groton Chevrolet); Loren (wife Diane, children Laurie, Terrie and Traci) employed at Safeguard in Aberdeen; and Beverly,deceased. Katie married Wayne Knock and farmed at Davis, S.D. They later moved to Enumclaw, WA, where they operated a dairy farm with their son, Darrell. Other children are Diane Peters , who has one daughter Darcie, Enumclaw, WA; and Lyle, Rapid City Air Force Base.
Inez married Arthur Knock and farmed at Lennox, S.D. unti l mov-ing to Willow Lake, S.D. where they now farm with the ir sons, Paul and Tebbo. Other children are Roger (wife Cherri and children Derrick and Lindsey), Desmet, S.D.; Richard, Brookings, S.D.; Wallace with the GTA elevator at Claire City, S.D.; Ruth, teaching at Alces-ter, S.D. and Ardys at home.
Henry married Deloris Martins and lived in the Amherst are a be-fore moving to Brampton, N.D. where they farm with their son, David. Other children are H. Michael (wife Mary Jane Anderson and their children, Chad and Jason) employed at Horton, Ind. at Britton; Karen at home and Timothy, deceased.
Frederick married Jean Norman. He retired from the Air Force af-ter 20 years of service and is now a plumber at Spokane, WA. Chil-dren are Lois Connery, Bobbie Norman, Linda Lee , all of Spokane, WA. and Suzanne Barsness, Seattle, WA.
Frances married Erwin Behnke and farms near Britton, S.D. Their children are Eugene (wife Betty and daughter Sarah Jane) Britton, S.D., and Darwin employed at Data Control in Rapid City, S.D.
Grayce married Arvid Beilke and they reside in Aberdeen, S. D. where he is employed at the Wheat Growers Association. Their chil-dren are Debra, Donna, and Douglas. 5
