"Hinderk Berends 'Benjamin Henry' Winter was born on August 31, 1857, in Germany, and departed this life on December 20, 1948. He was united in marriage to Hebke 'Hattie' Smidt on December 25, 1882; she was born September 25, 1853, inGermany, and died on December 1, 1937, at Buffalo Center. In 1892, Benjamin and Hattie and their three oldest children came to this country, first making their home at Pekin, Illinois. Ten years later, in 1902, they came to Iowa andtook up farming northeast of Buffalo Center. In 1912 they retired and moved into Buffalo Center. They were the parents of four sons: Ubbe Berends, William H., Epko, and Henry B."
