Note: Wayne H Hatterman, 78 of Cherokee, IA died Tuesday December 25, 2001 in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at 10;30 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee with the Rev Richard Arndt officiaiting. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cmetery near Cherokee. The Greenwood funeral home of Cherokee was in charge of arrangements. LA Wescott Post #2253 held graveside military services atthe cemetery.
Wayne was born march 16, 1923 in O'Brien County near Germantown, IA to henry and Clara (Kluender) Hatterman. he attended country school in Everly and Harris IA until 1932 when his family moved to Cherokee. He graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1940. In December 1940 he joined the US Navy. he served for over 2 years in american Samoa and nearly a year in China, during World War II. He became a chief Pharmacist mate. he was discharged in March of 1946. On June 14, 1946 he married Fannie Sleeper in Cherokee, IA.
He worked as a printer for the Cherokee Courier and later the Cherokee Daily Times, when he purchased the printing department and established Wayne Printing now on East Main, until he retired in September 1993. Wayne was a member of the VFW, American legion, and the DAV, and the SACO Veteran's US Naval Group of China and enjoyed traveling to their annual reunions.
Wayne was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church having held every office of the Voter's Assembly over the years. Wayne taught Sunday School for several years. He was a history buff and also enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife; 2 daughters Esther Carey and husband John of Marcus, IA and Ellen Peters and husband John of Bloomington, MN; 5 grandchildren Christopher Carey, Bloomington; Erin (Jeff) GuerraValparaiso, IN, Timothy Carey, Cedar Falls, IA; Emily Peters of New York City; and Alex Peters of St. Cloud, MN; 1 brother Eldon (Mary Jane) Hatterman of Cherokee. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister Ruby.
