Note: Edward Alfred Onken, 81, of Slayton died Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Our House Hospice Cottage. Born May 30, 1921 in Nobles County, he was the son of John and Margaret (Finke) Onken. He married Mildred Johnson April 26, 1944 in Reading.
He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After marriage they farmed near Fulda, Avoca, Lake Wilson and Iona. They moved into Slayton in 1981, but he continued farming with his son until 1997. He entered hospice care inDecember 2002. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Avoca. he volunteered at the Murray Coounty Food Shelf.
Surviving are his wife, one son Allen Onken, Slayton; 2 daughters Carol (Loren) Schroer, Brewster; and Luann (Jim) Weber, Alexandria, VA; 1 brother Arnie (Sylvia) Onken and 1 sister Joan Janke and 6 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Tuesday at Totzke Funeral Home, Slayton and from 9:30-10:30 Wednesday at Failth Lutheran, Avoca. The service will be 10:30 am Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Avoca with the Rev. Joy Armstrongofficiating. Burial will be in Slayton memorial Gardens.
