Leland "Lee" Charles Teahon, 83, of Halsey, passed away in Kearney, Jan. 5, 2012. Lee was born Sept. 7, 1928, to Charles James and Clara Catherine (Franssen) Teahon in Anselmo.
He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1945. After high school, Lee and some friends made their way to Cody to find work. It was during Lee's time in Cody that he met Anne Marie Barnes of Hay Springs.
Lee and Anne were married on Lee's 21st birthday at Nenzel. They moved to Broken Bow in 1950, where Lee worked for Fred Bates. During their time in Broken Bow, Lee and Anne had five children.
After Bates passed, Lee and his family moved north of Halsey to the Ewing Place where Lee worked for the Ryman brothers for over 19 years. Anne died in 1972, after a brief illness. After that, Lee and his brother Bill and sister-in-law Val, purchased a tavern from Fritz and Shirley Marten. They named it the Double T and opened on Election Day 1972.
Lee met Reta Kaye Hardy, daughter of Bert and Eva Hardy of Thedford, and they were married Oct 5, 1973 in Anselmo. From this union, three sons were born.
Lee continued to work at the Ryman Ranch in addition to the Double T for many years. Over the years, Lee also helped his father-in-law, Bert Hardy at his ranch north of Thedford. Lee was a great carpenter and was always busy helping people with various projects during his lifetime.
Lee will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and his practical jokes. There was never a person to pass through the door of the Double T that didn't meet one of Lee's jests or yarns. He was so proud of his family and was quick to let people know that he had eight children, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lee loved his Herefords and always had a special dog by his side. Lee was an avid sports fan and never missed one of his children's games; whether it was football, basketball, baseball, track, volleyball, or wrestling. Lee and his buddies always made sure to watch every Nebraska Husker football game.
Lee was also an active member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), Knights of Columbus, Halsey Village Board, Thomas County Election Board, and was a Blaine County 4-H leader.
Lee is survived by his wife, Reta, and his eight children: Fred of Bakersfield, Calif., Garry (Lisa) of Guthrie, Okla., Larry (Linda) of Chadron, Kathy Christensen (Dewayne) of Halsey, Don of Glendale, Ariz., Mike of Halsey, Matt of Halsey, and Mark of Halsey; grandchildren: Karri (Chad) Teahon of Ft. Collins, Colo., Bridget (Jason) Howell of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Courtney Teahon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Jesse Teahon of Guthrie, Okla., Colton Teahon of Guthrie, Okla., Brandi (David) Dickerson of Leawood, Kan., Tyler Teahon of Purdum, Candein (Frank) Chairez of Chula Vista, Calif., Cad (Daryleen) Christensen of Rigby, Idaho, and Liam Teahon of Halsey; and great-grandchildren: Dylan Johnson of Guthrie, Okla., Jamen Marzonie of Ft. Lee is also survived by his sisters: Evelyn Gracey of Arnold, Millie Brewer of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Marlene Barent of North Platte, Connie Britton of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers: Bill (Val) of Cordis Lakes, Ariz., Tom of Arnold, Jim of North Platte; brothers-in-law: Marlon Cumpston of Broken Bow, Wayne (Bette) Hardy of Anselmo, Albert (Joann) Hardy of Anselmo, Don (Sandra) Hardy of Anselmo, Bill (Diann) Hardy of York; sisters-in-law: Jean Ann Teahon of Dunning, Minnie Mary Hamilton of Halsey, and many nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; parents Charley and Clara; sister, Lois Cumpston; brothers Jerry and Donald "Sammy"; brothers-in-law, Gayle Hamilton, Gene Gracey, and John Brewer; father-in-law, Bert Hardy; mother-in-law, Eva Hardy; granddaughter, Christy Teahon; and a host of friends and neighbors.
A Rosary was held Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold. The Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo.
