Ernest Longnecker --- Whithouse resident was Mayor & Marshall
Ernest Longnecker, a lifelong resident of Whitehouse who served the village in a variety of public positions, died of cancer Friday in the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Twp. He was 89.
Mr Longnecker, known as 'Red' because of his full head of red hair, served two terms as Whitehouse mayor & for more than 20 years was the village marshall & street commissioner.
As marshall in the 1940s he was paid $40 a month for a job that had him on 24 hour call. His duties included patrolling streets, inspecting sewers, & serving as lifeguard, dog catcher, game warden, & village handyman.
Mr Longnecker made news in April 1950, when he seized a dozen slot machines from area restaurants. The slot machines, stored in the Whitehouse village garage, then were stolen.
He was elected mayor in 1957.
As a young man Mr Longnecker worked for the France Stone Company in Whitehouse. He was a skilled brick & stone mason who built three family homes.
During World War II, he took over operation of Longnecker Dairy for his brother, Martin, who was in the military. Much later, he worked in the maintenance department at Anthony Wayne High School.
For the last several years , he spent his summer months as the propietor of Pappy's Veggies, a vegetable stand in front of his Finzel Road home.
He & Marguerite, his wife of 70 years, spent their winters in Bradenton, Florida.
"We had a lot of fun & a lot of good times together", Mrs Longnecker said. He enjoyed hunting & fishing.
