Obituary of Eggo Stohr

Our days are numbered. the time comes to every one when he must depart from this life and go the way of all flesh. This time has come to Eggo Stohr, today we lay him to rest.

He was the first-born son of Henry Stohr and his wife Caroline Backer, born to them January 26, 1876 in Hardin County, Iowa. Since his parents were Christian and Godfearing, they had him baptized in the Lutheran faith when he was 7months old, presenting him to the Lord to be his child and heir.

He spent the first six years in Hardin County and then removed with his parents to Kossuth County, in 1882. In 1883 they moved to Winnebago County where he has resided ever since.

When 19 years old at the time of his confirmation, he personally renewed his pledge made by his sponsors, whe he was baptized, promising to be a child of God and faithful until death. A promise that we know he has kept. In 1900 he wasunited in marriage to Etta Eden, which union was blessed with 7 children. Mr. Stohr enjoyed good health all his life until last fall when he noticed that his health began to fail. Not suspecting that it was serious. After som time,noticing that he did not improve, he consulted the local physicians but they did not give him much encouragement, advising him to go to Rochester for medical examination. There the true cause of his failing health was determined, namelycancer of the stomach, informing him at the same time that nothing could be done for him. This discouraging information he accepted as a true Christian, submitting to the will of God in humbleness of faith, asking only that the Lordwould not let him suffer too long and for strength to bear the cross patiently until the time when he would relieve him from his suffering by death, which he did not dread.

Last Sunday when he knew that the end would soon come, he prepared himself by partaking of the Holy Sacrament, and he did not have to wait long for the end to come. Tuesday evening at 9:00 P. M. the Lord called him home and all hissufferings are now ended. He attained the age of 52 years, 1 month and 23 days. Those that mourn his death are: his beloved wife, six children, one son, Henry and five daughters, Mrs. Walbert Bruns, Caroline, Gertrude, Lydia and Laura,one son died at birth. Also two brothers Heiko Stohr of Woden and John of Wesley, and one sister, Mrs. Enno Eden beside other relatives and many friends.

Eggo Stohr was a trustworthy friend and a devout Christian, holding various offices both in the community and the church. He was trustee of the local Lutheran congregation for many years. He will be missed not only by his family, butalso by his many friends. But we know and realize that our loss was his gain and therefore we say rest in peace till we met again. May the Lord in whom he trusted and in whom he found comfort in his suffering, comfort also the bereavedand lead them as he led him from sorrow and suffering to happiness and heaven.
