'Francis J. and Louise Johnke Family
Francis J. (Frank) Johnke, son of William and Anna Corth Johnke, was born at Sheldon, Iowa on June 16, 1884. At the age of two, he moved to Dakota Territory with his parents. The family moved to Delaware Township in 1896. Frank'sfather bough the southeast quarter of Section 16 in 1905 and the southwest quarter of Section 16 in 1906. Frank purchased the latter from his father in 1911 and moved there with his wife, Talka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Jan Groen, andtheir son, William John. Francis L. (Fritz) and Harold F. were also born to this union. In May of 1920, when Harold was a baby, Talka died of diphtheria.
At Salem, on Aug. 30, 1921, Frank married Louise Bultena, daughter of Henry G. and Gesina Bultena. Louise was born at Lennox on Jan. 23, 1898 and was a graduate of Lennox High School. Louise was employed by a millinery store in Parkerand assisted her father in the general merchandise store which he operated for a number of years.
After their marriage, Frank and Louise acquired the southeast quarter of Section 20. It was here that Frank built a new home. In the meantime, the family lived in Lennox. William and Fritz attended school there. Harold remained in thehome of his grandparents where he grew to manhood. It was in Lennox on Oct. 20, 1925, that Sarah Ann was born. After the completion of their home, the family moved to the farm in Delaware Township.
Fritz assisted his father with the farming, but Frank's love was carpentry. He built many homes and farm buildings in the Lennox and Centerville area. Frank was an elder in the Delaware Reformed Church. He served on the Rose Cottageschool board for a number of years. Sarah Ann attended school there. Because the Johnkes lived close to the school, the family provided a home for many teachers who taught at Rose Cottage.
In 1939 Frank, Louise, and Sarah Ann moved back to Lennox. Fritz had married Anna Mae Frinkman in 1937 and they moved into the farm home.
Frank continued to do carpentry work, building another family home in Lennox and later purchasing and remodeling the Henry G. Bultena home. Frank and Louise were living there when Frank passed away on Dec. 5, 1956.
Louise was adept with needlework. Besides many other handmade articles, punchwork pillow cases and loopstich baby booties were her specialty. She made and sold much of her handwork.
Louise suffered a stroke and passed away on Oct. 12, 1971. Frank and Louise were members of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. They are buried in the Lennox Cemetery.
William married Leola Runkel. They had three children: William, Gerry, and Sally. William pursued construction work and spent many years in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Olympia, Wash. He is now deceased.
Fritz and Ann Mae had six children: James, Frank, Leroy, Loretta, Susan, and Dix. Fritz passed away on Sept. 27, 1973.' - pg 476
'Harold and his wife, Marie, have one daughter, Donna. Harold and Marie live in West Des Moines, Iowa, and Harold is employed with the Mededith Publishing Company.
