They were married September 20, 1900 and a daughter, Elska, was born. After some time theydecided to seek a better life for themselves and their future family. They decided to immigrate to America and left Germany on March 11, 1902. They boarded the ship Kaiser Wilhelm The Grosser in Bremerhaven, Germany and sailed to America arriving in New York (no doubt Ellis Island) on March 19, 1902. They traveled by train, going directly to Kossuth County, Iowa, rather than going to Butler or Grundy County, Iowa, where most of the German immigrants went. They arrived in Titonka on March 22, 1902.
They settled in a house located in a pasture about one half mile south of German Valley in the southwest quarter of Section 28, German Township. They moved there in November of 1902. They also joined the Ramsey Reformed Church in 1902.In June of 1903 their only child, Elska, passed away. ...
In January of 1917 they moved to the farm they had purchased in the southeast quarter of Section 24, Ramsey Township.
The Smidts had nine children after coming to America. They were: Meindert, Elsie, Siemen, Enko, Jennie, Esdert, John, Warner and Grace. ... Elsie married Ehno Folkerts, ... Jennie married Fred Gray, ... and Grace married Floyd Huisman. ...
