"Hi, thanks for the info - so hard to find much on Canadians, especially recently.

I have been checking obituaries in the Battle Creek newspapers. The papers are all digitized, but you have to search them at the library and they only give non-residents an hour for free. So If I'm in BC for lunch, etc; I spend an hourat the library. I have had good luck photographing them with my iPad and then transcribing them at home. I'm sending a couple to you- one is for Rexford Alwood (son of Lester, son of David William) who was killed when his car was hit bya train in Battle Creek. The other article I found when just doing a general search on Alwood; it is about Virginia Alwood (dau of Henry F, son of Charles); who eloped to Windsor and created a furor. I found the marriage on Ancestry;some of my comments are at the bottom.

"Battle Creek Journal 8 Oct 1910 Elopement and Matrimonial Venture May Have Landed Local Girl in "White Slave" Net and Warrant is Issued for Husband An elopement to Windsor, a marriage to a sixteen year old girl, under representation to the officiating minister she was 20, a return to this city for a few days' stay and his sudden departure with his child wife are the events whichtranspired only last week and which will undoubtedly lead to the arrest of Harry Oliver, alias Smith on a charge of kidnaping when his whereabouts are ascertained. Oliver, or Smith, as he sometimes called himself, is a man 30 years of age. He formerly worked at Smith's and also Graham's cafe. The girl in the case is Virginia Alwood, daughter of Mr & Mrs F H Alwood, of Urbandale. Up to a short timeago she was employed at Eldred's confectionary store. It is feared that using matrimony as a means to that end, the girl has been caught in a "white slave" net. While an attempt was made to keep the details of the affair quiet, the story leaked out today, due to the girl's father's efforts to secure a warrant for his unwelcome son-in-law. In all probability, the warrant charging the ex-localrestaurant waiter with kidnaping will be issued today with a strong probability of another warrant issued in Windsor charging him with perjury in swearing the age of his wife was 20 years when procuring his license to wed her. From available information int he case it seems that Oliver and the girl left the city last week, going to Windsor where they were joined in marriage. A few days later they returned to the city and took up their residence in the Wardblock. The parents of the girl made efforts to have the couple live with them in Urbandale, but Oliver refused and suddenly left the city a few days ago, taking his wife with him. Suspicious of Oliver's action, the father of the girl inthe cad placed the matter in the hands of the local officials and it was then learned that Oliver had perjured himself in regard to his wife's age at Windsor. The parent s of the girl who are respectable people living Urbandale are heart broken over the affair and in addition question Oliver's intentions in marrying their daughter. They express some fear that he may have drugged the girl andmarried her for the purpose of forcing her into a life of immorality. This fear is substantiated by the knowledge the officers have that while occupying rooms in the Ward block, the husband forced his wife to disrobe in sight of a malefriend of his, who occupied an adjoining room. Though the officers have made strenuous to locate Oliver and the girl he is said to have duped, no trace of his whereabouts has yet been unearthed. The warrants in the case will be issued this afternoon probably with the sanction ofProsecuting Attorney Cavanagh. These will be singed by the irate father of the girl in the case, who intends to make a strenuous effort to have the marriage set aside.

Comment - Groom's name on the marriage register is Charles Smith. An article from 14 Oct talks about bigamy - but they were looking at wrong guy. Some other articles in paper later on mention visits between Alwoods and daughter VirginiaSmith, Did not see him under any combination of Harry, Charles, + Smith or Oliver in 1910 census in Battle Creek. Urbandale is a part of Battle Creek on the west side of town " <>
