Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa, USA Burial East Side Cemetery Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa, USA Memorial ID 100135771
ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Norma P. Swalve, 83, of Estherville will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Estherville with Pastor Chad Ensz and Pastor Kennen Barber-Ensz officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville.
She died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at the Rosewood Manor Nursing Home in Estherville.
Norma Pearl (Archer) Swalve, the daughter of Benjamin and Cornelia (Montgomery) Archer, was born on April 1, 1929, in Hoprig.
She received her education in Maple Hill and Estherville schools. As a young girl, Norma spent time with the Conrad and Lena Frerichs family and considered the Frerichs' her family as well. She moved to Chicago as a teenager and worked there for a short time.
On Oct. 27, 1946, Norma was united in marriage to Otto Joe Swalve Jr. at the Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. The couple made their home in Estherville. Norma served as the church secretary for the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. In the early 60's, the family moved to Northwood where they farmed for five years. They returned to Estherville and Norma enrolled in the Iowa Lakes Community College nursing program. She opened up their home to fellow students who couldn't find housing, which lead to the "Florence Nightingale" Award she received when she graduated.
Norma worked as a nurse at the Holy Family Hospital, various care centers in the area, for Kimberly Nursing, in Dr. Lindholm's office and in private home care until her own health failed. For the past eight years she has resided at the Rosewood Manor Nursing home, where she enjoyed participating in activities and visiting with other residents and staff.
Norma was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the First Presbyterian Church of Estherville. She will be remembered for the way she cared deeply for everyone, always put others first, worked hard, had great faith in God, loved music and found true pleasures in the "little things in life". Most important to Norma were her relationships with people, especially her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish Norma's memory are her son, Lowell, and his wife, Diane, of Estherville; four grandchildren: Marcy Sander and her husband, Kevin, of Estherville, Ryan Swalve and his wife, Kristin, of Winterset, Tommy Fry and his wife, Leana, of Des Moines and Colleen Opitz and her husband, Mike, of Gaithersburg, Md.; eight great-grandchildren: Izaak and Abby Sander, Nicolas and Anna Swalve, Tyler, Aaron, and Jordan Fry and Miranda Opitz; one brother, Milton (Doc) Archer, and his wife Sharon, of Estherville; one sister, Fern Archer, of Evanston, Ill.; two brothers-in-law: Ernest Solmonson and Andrew Swalve and his wife, Rozella, all of Estherville; seven sisters-in-law: Sena McGregor and her husband, Forrest, of Buffalo Center, Leona Kleine of Princeton, Minn., Betty Swalve of Oyens, Adeline Archer of Oregon, Anita Barlow, Ada Williams, Elsie Selberg and her husband, Harold, all of Estherville and many nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her daughter, Phyllis (Fry); her parents; three brothers; six sisters; seven sisters-in-law; 13 brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
