Notities over Vince Vincent "Vincent Marcks" Marks of Nelson Co.

{geni:about_me} Here is an interesting possibility, perhaps Vincent is not the son of Unidentified Link, perhaps he IS Unidentified Link and the son of John or one of his brothers? Frances (possible sister of unidentified link) is Bragg's second wife, so she how much younger is she? Could her brother (possible Vincent) marry one of Bragg's daughters from his first marriage?

Note from Dudley Marks

"Vincent Marks was my third great grandfather. The original Hastings Marks was the first child born to John Marks and Elizabeth of Hastings in the early 1600s in the Tidewater of Virginia. Family legend has it that we are descended from this early line. It may be that we were wanting to lay claim to Jefferson through marriage of a later Hastings Marks to his sister Anna. Minor Haskins Marks, grandson of Austin Minor, I believe was intended to be Hastings, but had his name misspelled by the census taker. Austin Minor, son of Vincent, was born in a community referred to as St. John's Parish. They had neighbors with the surnames Minor and Austin. I am at a dead end with Vincent's father. My great grandfather, William Dudley, ran the ferry and general store/post office at Bent Creek, VA until his death in 1926 or '24. It appears that the Markses were merchants for generations, and migrated along the James River in central Virginia for years

I saw your note on Geni.com. Minor Haskins Marks is my great grandfather. I can believe there Haskins is a misspelled Hastings, but as it is apparently a name he used at some stages in his life, I don’t know with confidence that the misspelling is a fault of a census taker. I fully agree with you that Vincent’s direct parentage is, at minimum, very difficult to trace. I believe he is the same Vincent who married Elizabeth Bragg, which strongly suggests that he is descendant from the Richmond County Marks family (that family married the Bragg family at least twice more including Elizabeth’s step-mother and there are several other Vincents in that family). It is possible that that family is descendant from the Isle of Wight County (Tidewater) Marks family, but I cannot find definite evidence. I know of no evidence of the Tidewater Markses moving north of the James River except possibly with the earliest Richmond County Marks ancestor and I cannot find evidence of where he came from.

There is a small chance that Vincent is from the other Virginia Marks family from that era, which is the Jefferson-related Marks. The two strong indicators of that are (1) the name Hastings and (2) the Nelson County location (possibly originating in Fluvanna County). This may have a precise proximity to part of the Richmond County Marks family (if there is the Fluvanna connection), but it also has general proximity to the Albemarle County (Jefferson-related) Marks. The link to Albemarle County would be even stronger if Vincent is not the Vincent Marks who married Elizabeth Bragg in Fluvanna County, but that does require TWO mysterious Vincent Marks at roughly the same place at roughly the same time, which would be very unlikely in a Virginia in the late-mid 1700s (population <700,000) in.

If you come across other information about Vincent’s ancestry, please let me know. I am putting your note (minus email info) and my reply into the “about” section of Vincent Marks.

Thanks for your reply. Well, Cuz, Minor Haskins Marks was my grandfather Thomas Holmes brother. As I looked through some internet postings yesterday, I noticed the name Frances going back quite a ways in the Bragg or Marks gen. Haskins had a sister named Frances Earle.

On a side note, Bent Creek (Duigidsville), was a pretty rough spot, and when I went there to see if anyone had any history of the Marks family, I was a little concerned about what I might uncover. It turned out that William Dudley, Haskins' father, started the Maple Grove Baptist Church in Bent Creek. I was relieved to find out he hadn't been rustling horses.

Years ago, an anthropology professor at Sweet Briar told me that there were more Markses in the Nelson County census than any other family in 1800. I did look at the original census in Lovingston, but didn't verify her statement. I think Minor and ''Heston''(probably another Hastings)must have lived in the same household, as they were listed together in the census.

I don't know where you reside, but Hampden-Sydney College has a copy of the history of the Marks family ( with some incorrect info) that was printed in the '30s by a member of the Georgia branch. It is kept in the rare book collection. There is another copy in the Library of Congress. You may find it interesting, as it begins with John Marks and Elizabeth of Hastings arrival in Virginia in the 1600s. There are a pile of Hastings Marks in the U.S., particularly in Arkansas. Thanks for all of your research. I wish we knew who Vincent's father was. I always surmised that we were somehow hooked up with the Peter Marks of the Hanover bunch. He ran an ordinary, and it seems that a lot of the Markses ran general stores along the James River in later years.

Ancestor, route not clear [https://www.geni.com/people/William-Marks/6000000038966101859]

Vincent was probably married in Columbia Township at the origin of the Kanawha Canal, which is now in Fluvanna County, Virginia, but was in Albemarle County when Vincent was born (between 1760 and 1772). The rest of Vincent's family shows more connection with Richmond County, which may be where he was born. His wife's stepmother shares his family name and is likely his aunt or second cousin. She has 6 brothers and an uncle with generally poor genealogical records for their subsequent generations; one of these or an unidentified cousin is Vincent's most likely father. There is a very poor chance that Vincent is from a different Marks family with happenstance name resemblance (there is a prominent Marks family in Albemarle at about the same time, but they do not seem to be associated with Columbia Township).

[https://www.geni.com/people/John-Marks/6000000000591484353] is likely the 2x ancestor of Vincent Marks. The intermediate ancestor is probably one of Frances Marks' brothers. This is related to the fact that some of the Marks siblings moved to Columbia in Fluvanna County about the time that Frances married John Bragg [https://www.geni.com/people/John-Bragg/6000000000591482273?through=6000000012375485595], who is Elizabeth Bragg's [https://www.geni.com/people/Elizabeth-Bragg/6000000012375485595?from_flash=1&fsession_id=1451445403931&through=6000000012375485595] father by his first wife.

There is probably a link between Vincent and Elizabeth's step mother Frances Marks [http://tinyurl.com/nvvvbgm] who is reportedly from Goochland or Fluvanna (Vincent was married in Fluvanna) The genealogy on Frances does not substantially identify lateral relatives [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:SBX6-XNB]

The most likely ancestor (n generations uncertain) is either [https://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000038950833934#6000000038966101859] (most likely because his descendant is Vincent's wife's father's second wife) or [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:37KX-167]. It is more likely the William Marks line (linked to Fluvanna County and to Vincent's ancestors), but the Marks line (linked to the Jefferson family) cannot be ruled out without more information because of proximity. ----
Lived in Nelson County in 1830 [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH5H-7J5] and in Amherst County in 1820 [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHLC-NV3] (his name is ''incorrectly'' transcribed as Venus). Assuming he is the oldest male member of this family, he was born between 1770 and 1780. He had 4 male (age 0 to 30) and 4 female (age 15 to 40) dependent (relatives) other than his wife. This makes him Elizabeth's husband as Elizabeth and Vincent were married in 1897. Austin Minor Marks, his child (my ancestor), was an adult living in Nelson County in 1840 [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHBW-S9K], which further confirms that this is the father of A M Marks (father Vince, in the death record of Austin, aka, A M) . Nelson County was separated from Amherst County in 1807. So links to both for Austin are not surprising.

Not a weakness after all. The marriage was in 1897: (A weakness in this link is the time from one generation to the next. It is possible that Vince is 2nd generation Vincent and Elizabeth Bragg is Austin's grandmother rather than his mother.)

V. Marks has a child Edward A. Marks whose mother is listed as P. Marks. However, Edward was born in 1831, so P. Marks could be Vincent's second wife or Edward could be a grandson.

Another link between Vincent Marks and Frances Marks Bragg's ancestors is the recurrence of the name "Minor" which is found both with Frances' family and with two of Vincent's descendants.
----
This appears to be a descendant in Nelson County [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:34NM-CCQ]. Hasten (also listed as Heston, here [[https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRQF-MPJ]]) has a son with a middle name "Vincent" and a grandson with a middle name "Minor". The first name, Hasten, is similar to both Hastings (not the same Marks family) and Haskins, which is the name of Austin Minor Marks' grandson [https://www.geni.com/people/Minas-Minor-Marks/6000000027469154153] (my great-grandfather).

----
There is another Vincent Marks [http://tinyurl.com/hskq9fz] (most records) in Richmond (County?), who could be Vincent's son or other descendant, or a more distant relation. This Vincent married Susan France in 1847, who apparently soon died. He then married (her sister?) Mary France and had at least 7 children, including another Vincent.
----
For the period 1790 to 1850 these two records are too ambiguous to attribute to the Vincent Marks household [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH5H-SGD] and [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHBM-H2F], although the first could be a child and the second could be his wife, who would have, then outlived him. For this reason I no long attribute the household V. Marks and P. Marks parents of Edward Marks to Vincent and a second wife. Instead, I have listed this V. Marks as an otherwise unidentified child of Vincent. If Elizabeth did not outlive him, the the V. Marks could be Vincent, who may have remarried late in life.

Comment from [https://www.geni.com/discussions/176664?msg=1193304]

This may already be known, but Vincent Marks lived in St. John's parish in either Albemarle or Fluvanna County,( been a while since I read this). He was listed as a member of the Virginia Militia in 1812, briefly, as I'm fairly certain was due to the British invasion of Washington, D.C.

He had a son named Austin Minor. A listing of the residents of St. John's parish included surnames including Austins and Min.ors. I do not know if they were related or just well thought of by Vincent and his wife Betsy Bragg. Vincent and Betsy were married in Fluvanna County. Thanks to all for your continuing research. I would love to know Vincent's father's name.
