His many thousands of descendants would appreciate your leaving him intact with his true identity and family. JUST UNDID ANOTHER CATASTROPHIC merge that completely changed his identity, removed him from his correct ancestry and removed his true wife from him and left her with 22 children--the others belonging to a DIFFERENT, UNRELATED Joseph Stewart who ended up in South Carolina. PLEASE READ SOURCES & MEMORIES and do not alter identities.eph was born about 1740 in Sussex, Delaware, 5th son of Samuel and Lydia (Harrison) Stewart as per their wills. JOSEPH's ONLY PROVEN WIFE IS SARAH GILBERT, as per their children and grandchildren. and had 12 children and died at Overton, Tennessee in 1823. His sketch in Overton County History states that the author found record that he made his will in 1823 but it has since been lost. THERE is a very FALSE LINEAGE ONLINE that tries to make his nephew William, son of John, into an unrelated William Monroe Stewart. Records for both show the distinct differences.OMMON SURNAME, Joseph gets wrongly merged with others and receives at times erroneous Findagrave attachments that are not his since there is record of his will being made in 1823. PLEASE READ HIS FAMILY GROUP SHEET IN MEMORIES for Joseph as father and Sarah Gilbert as mother. There is no proof that this Joseph Stewart married Mary Tuck as the immediate family left no record of Mary Tucker and there were others named Joseph Stewart in the area! These guessed relationships only add confusion. The family group record prepared by J. T. Stewart of Watertown, Tennessee is helpful because he had access to archives and family bibles that have helped confirm that there were previous errors. For Joseph's siblings please see page 295 of Sarah Maiden Finch Rollins, Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families, (1991). Except for marriage date, this source is in agreement with J. T. Stewart's family group record and both are as accurate as found in print after many years of research. Assigning other wives to Joseph is guesswork as there was more than one of his name in the area. About Joseph, Rollins said, " b. ca. 1740, Sussex County." m. ca. 1765, [sic] Sarah Gilbert. They lived in Surry (later Stokes, now Forsyth County, North Carolina. In 1779 he sold his inherited land and moved to Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee); d.. 1823/4, Overton County, Tennessee. Children: Lydia, Joseph, Patsy, Benjamin, John, Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Samuel, David, William, Jesse." date too young and giving him a name not used in official records or his early family records handed down. His family of children as compiled by his grandchildren have been picked apart and become combined with others who were different people. There is also a dispute on the death year suggesting the grave information may be a combination of two different people. J. T. Stewart of Watertown, Tennessee, now deceased, researched this family for many years and had access to the family Bible of Joseph's youngest son Jesse. This Joseph Stewart has been in the past by some erroneously assigned a birth year of 1725, about 15 years too early. This causes all kinds of genealogical problems in his relationships. Other records have been found to confirm that about 1740 is more accurate. The original LDS submission of Joseph and his family was in 1877. Bap. 8 May 1877; End. 10 May 1877; SP 21 June 1933.ation about him and other errors about the family. Findagrave is not a primary source in this case as there is no headstone available. J. T. Stewart thought his death was in 1823 after he bought some property. His will was proved in 1824 but later lost. person and his family to the system in 1877, a reliable compiler of information on this family was J. T. Stewart of Watertown, Tennessee. See family group record and history attached in Memories. J. T. Stewart disagreed with the attached death date, instead believing it to be about 1823. the following sources:County and family were indeed living in Greene County, North Carolina (legal name). Historically speaking, however, this same area was also Caswell County, Franklin (extra-legally or illegal name) The settlers of the area, which includes Joseph Stewart, had succeeded from North Carolina and formed their own government for the State of Franklin. Congress never recognized Franklin as a state, and in fact created an amendment to keep such a thing from happening again. But from 1784-1788 this area where the Stewarts were living at the time of David & William's birth was known as Caswell County, Franklin.ton County, NCtime (and therefore in the illegal state of Franklin)tewart born at this time.ory to Congress, and its now called "Southwest Territory." to become a state. Jefferson County, Tennessee court record of August 1796 lists Joseph Stewart.
