LifeSketch: CAUTION: PLEASE DO NOT DUPLICATE OR MERGE HIM WITH OTHER DAVIDS. David Stewart, son of Samuel Stewart I, married Abigail [Harrison?] and died in Stokes County, North Carolina before his will was probated by 1803. David was born in Delaware and did not migrate to North Carolina until 1748, having temporarily left most of his family in the Shenandoah Valley. The rest of David's birth family followed to North Carolina by 1753. ent the interim years in Orange and Augusta counties of Virginia little north or present day Harrisonburg. This approximate birth date of 1725 is a compromise between the years suggested that have ranged from 1722-1729. The latter would have been too late for records that would have applied to an adult by 1747 and before. tain the many known details and references that may be found in many issues of the Stewart Clan Magazine and Maiden Family of Virginia and other sources that provide important information about this family for several generations. of faith and obedience." Joseph A. Waddell, Annals of Augusta County, Virginia, p. 152. Some have suggested that there may have circumstances that required this baptism as part of a marriage before Rev. Craig performed their ceremony. Just which Harrison was the parent of Abigail is not known. Research suggests that there may have been other Harrison descendants of David's generation (for example survivors of his deceased uncle Gideon's family) at Augusta County and a Joseph Harrison who was also of the generation of David's parents. In these frontier circumstances it would not have been unusual that David Stewart married a cousin. Assigning Abigail a specific parent, however, would at this point be pure guesswork. This family is difficult due to lack of records, but those who have researched this family will recognize these persons as they are now on Family Tree. They have been confused with others of similar names for some years and have gone through some erroneous merges now repaired. David Stewart's data as it now is on this page represents a distillation of what has been found in records cited in Maiden Family of Virginia and Stewart Clan Magazine and in his will and other records. SCM suggested David's birth may have been as early as 1722 and others have thought perhaps as late as 1729. During those years his parents lived in Sussex County, Delaware. If David married Abigail in 1747 as the Tinkling Spring Church record hints, then he was married shortly before he removed to North Carolina. This birth date of 1725 is also about as late as could be possible in order for David to be of an adult age when he appeared on records in Augusta County.
