Hannah's father Luke and her mother Elizabeth are mentioned starting on page 203. It says in part, "Luke...married Elizabeth, sister of William Gibbons of Hartford, Conn....After the death of Luke, his widow Elizabeth married Oct. 2, 1661, William Warriner of Springfield, to which town she removed with her two boys, John and Luke. William Warriner died in 1676, when she again married Sept. 17, 1678 in Milford, Mass., Joseph Baldwin of Hadley. Again becoming a widow she returned to Springfield where she died April 25, 1696." ck took freeman's oath in New Haven in company with Edward Hitchcock July 1, 1644. The date of his removal to Wethersfield is not known but he was a member of the jury at a court held in Hartford June 5, 1646 and March 2, 1647. As New Haven was not under the government of Conn. at that time, he was probably living in Wethersfield in 1646. Luke lived in the center of the village... He was by trade a shoemaker; a Captain at Crown Point in 1655; and selectman at Wethersfield in 1653 and 1656...he died Nov. 1, 1659." There is also in this source a transcription of his will where he mentions wife Elizabeth and sons John, Luke, and daughter Hanna. In subsequent pages, there are many details about his children. arried around that time or a little earlier. Elizabeth's brother was in Hartford as early as 1636. Luke and his wife were presumably living in New Haven in 1644 when he took the freeman's oath. This is around the time that we think Hannah's brother John was born. ate, Luke may have spent very little time in New Haven. New Haven was founded in 1638 by English Puritans. In 1637 a small party of Puritans moved to the New Haven harbor area and wintered over. In April 1638, the main party of five hundred Puritans who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony under the leadership of the Reverend John Davenport and the London merchant Theophilus Eaton sailed into the harbor. These settlers were hoping to establish a better theological community than the one they left in Massachusetts and sought to take advantage of the excellent port capabilities of the harbor. The Quinnipiacs, who were under attack by neighboring Pequots, sold their land to the settlers in return for protection. By 1640, the town's theocratic government and nine-square grid plan were in place, and the town was renamed Newhaven from Quinnipiac. The settlement became the headquarters of the New Haven Colony. At the time, the New Haven Colony was separate from the Connecticut Colony, which had been established to the north centering on Hartford. The first record we have of Luke was when he took the freeman's oath in 1644, which was 6 years after the main group settled there from Massachusetts. I don't know if he just arrived in the new world, or if he finally met the requirements to be a freeman. r long. Soon we pick up Luke's trail in Wethersfield. Founded in 1634 by a Puritan settlement party of "10 Men" including John Oldham, Robert Seeley and Nathaniel Foote, Wethersfield is arguably the oldest town in Connecticut. Luke is mentioned several times in the book, "The history of ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut : comprising the present towns of Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, and Newington, and of Glastonbury prior to its incorporation in 1693 : from date of earliest settlement until the present time," which can be found online here: https://archive.org/details/historyofancient11adam. It is actually a two-part volume, and Luke can be found on page 149, 163, 268, 272, 276, 277, 298, 306, and 317. ied. Or maybe he wasn't. birth record for Luke's youngest son (Hannah's little brother): records until about 1649. raveyard says that she died in 1733, age 88 years, which would mean that she was born in 1645. She apparently married in 1661. If all of these dates are correct, she married at 16 years of age, which was almost unheard of among the Puritans. However, looking at the date of the birth of her last child, using these dates above, she would have had her last child when she was 43, which was a fairly common time for women in those days to have their last child, so maybe these dates are reasonably accurate after all. Maybe things were difficult after her father's death, and perhaps her new stepfather wanted her to marry. Or maybe since her mother was moving in order to remarry, she chose not to go with her, although it looks like her brothers went with her mom. r of the book-referenced book about the HItchcock family decided that Hannah was the second child, born after John. There is the possibility that she was the oldest child. John married in 1666, and perhaps the author assumed that he was 26 at a time of his marriage, and therefore was born about 1640. If he were the second child, born about 1647, he would have been only 19 when he married, which was probably young for a Puritan. ass., had 14 children between 1662 and and 1688, including: hannah's mom, Elizabeth's third husband, Joseph Baldwin, was from Hadley. Perhaps Hannah helped play matchmaker.
