Detailsofschoolandalsoofarmyanddeathinformationofhislife: Educated at Saltwater Bridge School. First worked at “Blacks” Draper, Trafalgar Street then apprenticed to FN Jones, Saddler, Nelson. Had an accident whilst working there with a teasing machine called “the Devil” (for tearing up horse hair), got his hand mixed up in it. Went up to Brightwater to FN Jones father to learn collar making and turned out a good tradesman. He left that job and set up in Wakefield and did alright until ill health forced him to give it up. He died at age 24 years, 23rd August 1889.[2] [3]He was a member of the Naval Brigade (Volunteers) and was buried with military honours – a very large and impressive affair.[4][5] He is buried in Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.[6]
