   LifeSketch: Sir Richard Tunstall was born probably at Thurland castle about 1427. He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Tunstall (died 1431) and Eleanor Fitzhugh of Ravensworth, widow of Sir Philip Darcy.r.orkists and escaped to Scotland with Queen Margaret and was attainted. He besieged Carlisle but was defeated and reportedly captured at Carlisle in June 1462. It was reported that he was beheaded but in fact he had surrendered Naworth Castle, allowed to go free and was able to sieze Bambrough ‘by treachery’. Wedgwood: “In Nov. he and Wentworth were holding Dunstanborough against his cousin lord FitzHugh and lord Scrope. When Dunstanborough surrendered, 27 Dec. 1462, the duke of Somerset and Sir Nicholas Latimer were taken to Edward IV at Durham, swore fealty and were pardoned, but Tunstall got away and rejoined his King. John Conyers had the keeping of his lands and wife, but Sir Richard followed Henry VI in his three years' wanderings 1463-5. He was with Henry at Sir Richard Temple's in Yorkshire in July 1465, when he was betrayed to the Harrington's. Tunstall tried to defend him and gained him time to escape to the woods alone, where he was taken at last. But Tunstall got across county to Harlech, the last Lancastrian castle.” Many were captured by Edward IV but Richard was given a general pardon in October 1468.the throne and Richard was made Master of the Mint. He was member of parliament from 1491/2. Wedgwood says: “Apart from his courageous loyalty to Henry VI, and his remarkable luck, one cannot doubt that the man had the gift of popularity, and not only with Kings. Many men must have spared and helped him ; and no mere bravo would have been so often an ambassador.”
