Seu reinado foi marcado por circunstâncias desfavoráveis aos interesses de Portugal: a presença de corsários franceses no Atlântico, ameaçando as colônias; a dificuldade em manter as possessões orientais; a crise financeira do reino, agravada por fome e epidemias. Diante dos problemas na Ásia, d. João buscou uma compensação investindo na colonização do Brasil.
