LifeSketch: James Daniel Leonard Going, SC, a short time before his early death from typhoid fever. This pose shows him around 1880 when he was a student at the Greenville Military Institute in Greenville, SC. This school for young men, established by Col. John Bellinger Patrick (1832-1900), had opened in 1878 in the building formerly utilized as Greenville High School. It is believed that Uncle James, or Jim, became a student there in 1879. Col. Patrick moved the academy to Anderson, SC, in 1887, where it was known as the Patrick Military Institute. I know of only one more Union County man who attended Col. Patrick's school, and that was George Whitlock, the father of John Whitlock, whom so many Philippi residents recall.-- SOURCE: Fredrick Tucker
