LifeSketch: Naval officer, politician. He served with distinction in the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Having joined the Royal Navy at a young age, he had risen to the rank of commander of HMS Tisiphone by the time he reached the age of twenty. His next command was aboard HMS Tartar, which was lost in action at Puerto Plata, on Saint-Domingue in 1797. After serving in the North Sea, the Cape of Good Hope and on the East Indies station, he left the Navy after the Peace of Amiens and went into politics as Member of Parliament for Stirlingshire. In 1803 he resumed his naval career to serve in the Napoleonic Wars. He was given command of HMS Egyptienne and captured the sixteen gun French ship Epervier and the privateer Chiffonette before going on to support Vice-Admiral Robert Calder at the Battle of Cape Finisterre where he captured a Dutch merchant brig. After capturing the French brig-sloop Acteon and the Spanish ship Paulina, he left HMS Egyptienne and took command of HMS Revenge, HMS Bulwark and HMS Standard before being promoted to rear-admiral and commander-in-chief at Gibralter in 1814. Following a period in command at the West Indies he rose to the rank of admiral in 1837. He was returned to parliament as Member of Parliament for Stirlingshire four times during his time away from the navy and ended his career as Governor of Greenwich Hospital. He died from influenza at age sixty-six.
