Elizabeth was a friend and confidante of the author Henry James with whom she conducted a wide-ranging and sparkling correspondence. She was introduced to him by Daniel and Ariana Curtis at their Venetian home the Palazzo Barbaro in 1899.

Lancelot went to Eton and trained as a lawyer and went on to practice as a barrister in Canada. He served in the First World War as a Lieutenant in the 67th Brigade Royal Field Artillery from 1915 - 1918. He married Marion Irvine in 1917, unfortunately the marriage was short and childless as Lancelot died aged 31 in Egypt on 27th December 1918 shortly after the end of the War. He was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetary.ancelot was painted in Sargent's studio at 33 Tite Street in Chelsea. His mother Anne entertained him during sittings by reading to him from Rudyard Kipling's 'Jungle Book'.
