In the 1790 census As Powers, Jr., his wife and their young child were probably living with his parents in Shutesbury, Mass.; but by 1800 they were in New Salem, both aged 26-45;, with a son 10-16 (John aged 12), three sons and two daughters under ten (Chester 9, Rebecca 7, Samuel 5, Alfred 3, Lois 1).
On 12 Jan 1795 Amos Thomas of New Salem for 30 pounds sold to Asa Powers Jr. of New Salem, 24 acres in New Salem and Shutesbury;, bounded by Asa Powers of Shutesbury, Witness: Stephen Powers. On 21 Jan. 1795 Jonathan Southwick of New Salem for 40 pounds deeded to Asa Powers Jr. of New Salem 20 acres in lot No. 86 in Shutesbury. Witnesses: John Powers, Asa Powers. On 3 June 1806 Samuel King Jr. for $202 conveyed to Asa Powers Jr., of New Salem 50 acres in Shutesbury. All three deeds were filed 4 June 1806 (Franklin Co., Mass., Deeds, 22:507, 508, 509).
In the 1810 census of New Salem Asa Powers aged 26-45 years and his wife over 45 had a household as follows: two sons, one daughter 16-26 years (John aged 22, Chester aged 20, Rebecca aged 17); two sons, one daughter 10-16 (Samuel aged 15, Alfred aged 13, Lois aged 11); three sons and one daughter under ten (Roswell aged 9, Betsey aged 7, Robert aged 5, Proctor aged 2).
On 4 April 1806 Asa Powers, Jr., of New Salem sold for $2000 to Samuel Shaw of New Salem two acres with buildings in Shutesbury, where Jonathan Southwick now lives. On 3 June 1806 Asa Powers Jr., and wife Louis [sic] of New Salem conveyed to William Ward Esq. and Henry Ward Gent. of Shutesbury, rights in 50 acres in Shutesbury bought of Samuel King, Jr. On 6 Nov. 1810 Asa and Louis [sic] Powers of New Salem sold to Garner Hunt of Shutesbury eight acres in lot No. 18 in the 3rd Division in Shutesbury (ibid., 23:70; 22:520; 33:546).
During the War of 1812 Asa Powers served in Lt. Col. Longley's Reg't as captain of a company of State Militia raised at New Salem and vicinity in service at Boston Sept. 13 to Nov. 7, 1814 (Records of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Called out by the Governor of Massachusetts to Suppress a Threatened Invasion During the War of 1812, p. 66; also The Register, 19:339 Oct. 1865). Thereafter he was known as Capt. Asa Powers.
He became a prominent member of the old Whig Party. He succeeded to the ownership of his father's farm in Shutesbury, but "in the latter part of his life he sold the farm proper to his son Chester and built a commodious house for himself nearby, this being the house now owned [1895] by his grandson, James L. Powers" (Biographical Review: The Leading Citizens of Franklin Co., Mass., 1895, p. 508).
On 7 April 1820 Asa Powers of new Salem, Gent., for $500 sold to his son John Powers of Shutesbury 57 acres in New Salem and Shutesbury. Witness: Rebecca Powers. On 9 April 1820 Asa Powers of New Salem for $100 conveyed to Chester Powers of Shutesbury rights in an undivided one third of two tracts in Shutesbury, 87 and 12 acres respectively, being the same tracts conveyed to John Powers on 21 Sept. 1813 (ibid.). On 27 April 1824 Asa Powers of New Salem gave Alfred Powers of New Salem a mortgage on 50 acres part in New Salem and part in Shutesbury (Franklin Co., Mass., Deeds, 44:339; 46:372; 60:87).
On 7 Aug. 1827 Asa Powers of New Salem sold one half acre near his dwelling house to Merrick B. Cooley for a blacksmith ship. Witness: Betsey Powers. This location was in Cooleyville, which was originally in Shutesbury but later set off to New Salem. On 12 March 1831 Asa Powers of New Salem conveyed to Merrick B. Cooley, blacksmith, five square rods adjoining the blacksmith shop for dam and pond. Witness: Betsey Powers. On 2 Oct. 1833 Roswell Powers of New Salem gave Asa and Lois Powers of New Salem the possession, use and occupation of one half of 80 acres in New Salem during their natural lives. Witness: Abigail S. Powers [wife of Alfred]. On 28 April 1837 Asa and Lois Powers, Proctor and Harriet Powers of New Salem deeded to Amos Adams, Jr., or Orange, Mass., Elihu S. Thayer and Samuel Adams of Montague, Mass., land near the blacksmith shop of M. B. Cooley in New Salem (ibid., 77:224; 78:82; 129:105; 98:158).
