Russell Melvin Haug was born to Gunnarius Christian and Bertha Greenfield Haug in Pennock, Minnesota on March 4, 1914, the fifth of eleven children. He came West at the age of 17 and lived with his aunt, Johanna Edwards, in Southern
California. Later, he came to Merced and was employed by California Packing Corporation (Del Monte) at the Fancher Ranch near Planada. He made his home there and began a career as Purchasing Agent, conducting business for the Corporation. In
1936 he maried Evelyn May Robinson of Merced.Their union bore six children. A son, Fred Gunder Haug, was killed in 1969 in the Vietnam conflict. There are eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Russell joined the Elks Lodge in 1941 and continued as an active member for 50 years. He also was an active mamber of the Sons of Norway.
His marriage to Evelyn ended in divorce in 1970. He has been married to Barbara Larson Rogers for the past 21 years, making his home in Merced.
He completed a 47 year career with Del Monte and has continued to enjoy his interests with fishing, camping, and fellowship with friends and associates at the Elks Lodge. We will all miss him.
