1910 census for Elena. On that census it shows her sister, Bertha, living with them in Chicago and she was working as a milliner (quilt).
_______________
Dear Cousin Jeanette, After sending you my last letter with pictures, I have collected some new information that perhaps confirms that Hanna was fully capable both in
reading and writing.
The information is connected to her Christian Confirmation, and is on a microfilm holding Church protocol information from the Chruch of Gildeskaal
1845-1885. The film is let out by the National archive, hence the
information is public and documented historical facts.
At the time of Mariannas confirmation, the practice was that the vicar evaluated the ability to read and write along with knowledge about the
christian history and religion. She (and others) was given grades in a
special table in the Church protocol. She scale on writing was as follows:
* Hardly writes
* Writes well
* Writes very well
* Writes exceptionally
Marianne Dorthea had her Christian confirmation at 20th of June 1875. She was candidate No. 31, and the churchbook says that she had the following
grades: Writes well, Good knowledge in Christianity, Good skills.
About half of the candidates got the grade "Writes well". Very few got the grade "Hardly write" according to the churchbook.
Best regards, Åge
