"Mary was a fine, stawart lass; fit to grace any pioneers home. Morgan Crewson was apprentice d to a Blacksmith in trento, New Jersey. He was at work when only 12 years old. His father wa s Thomas Crewson and his mother was Lena Morgan. Thomas rode on horseback through the wood s and backroads preaching in private houses, schools or even the open air, if he could not fi nd a chruch handy. Lena's was the daughter of Elder Morgan and her grandfather was on the sa me ship as John Wesley who came to America to preach to the Indians of georgia. john wesley c ame to America in 1737. The name MORGAN is Welsh. In the 1700's the surname CREWSON was KREWD SON.
After his service with the Blacksmith, he travelled through Pennslyvania to the Ohio river an d down it to the Mississippi to New Orleans. In Pennsylvania he was challenged to show his gr eat strength of hand and arm. he took the anvil bythe horn and held it straight out. In late r years Morgan Crewson Jr. who was traveling from Gault to Ayr, heard an old man telling th e story of the time in Pennslyvania, when a man lifted an anvil by the horn. In New Orleans , Morgan nursed a fellow traveller through yellow fever, and then took it himself. When the y were both better they worked their passage back to New York. Morgan said he had worked on t he first steamer in 1807 to run on the Hudson River. By 1820 Morgan came to Canada, where h e worked for the Honorable WilliamMeritt who planned the Wellman canal. It is in that localit y that he met Mary Soper."
Purchased 100 acres from his father in law, John Soper 22 Jan 1830 (Lot 1, Concession 1 of Er in township. John Soper sold the SW 1/2, 100 acres to his daughter Mary on 17 June 1845. Morg an sold off small portions of the land to others including some of his children. This settlem ent became known and is still known today as CREWSON's CORNERS.
Morgan and Mary first built a log house near the little creek that came from the spring on Jo hn McIntoshs farm, northof the Corners. Elizabeth, Mary and William J. were born here and pr obably Joseph, john and thomas. Jane, Morgan P., Lorenzo, James and ellen were born ion th e stone house which was built in 1832 and is stilled lived in today but not by a member of th e family. It was a grand 1 1/2 story home witha full verandah running accross the front. At t he back of the house, a maple sapling is growing where Morgans blacksmith shop had once bee n located. "He was the Lord of the Manor ro all the new settlers around".
Both are buried at Everton Cemetery in Eramosa. Thier son, Morgan Puncheon Crewson continue d to live in the house with his wife Sarah Soper and here raised their 15 children
