1. The East Dock Bar, High Street, Methil, may be the Dock Tavern where Andrew Leitch died.
This Bar is still open, (2012) and is around 100 yards from the Steamboat Tavern, where Andrew was Publican in 1921.
2. Andrews son, John, died 14 April 1920 with Meningitis. Andrew was required to complete a form sent to him by the British Army, where he had to declare the living relatives of the dead soldier, on 2 December 1921. Andrew replied on 17th December 1921. The form had been sent to allow the Army to release the Medals that John was entitled to, to his Father, him being the next of kin.(NOK)

4. A marriage by 'Warrant of Sheriff' is a non-religious marriage unique to Scotland. The couple would testify before witnesses (2 required) and often in front of a solicitor. The testament would then be ratified by the local Sheriff Substitute (who did all the work) and would then be accepted by a registrar.
5. A very clear explanation of all sorts of Scottish marriages on this site:
http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/marriage/
Sheriffs warrant was a type of 'Irregular'Marriage as follows:
But Scotland's fame for distinctive marriage practices stemmed from 'irregular' marriages. There were three ways of forming a legal marriage without banns or a minister being present.
a. A couple were legally married if they declared themselves to be so in front of witnesses, regardless of whether this was followed by a sexual connection.
b. A promise of marriage, followed by a sexual relationship, was regarded as a legal marriage - but this had to be backed up by some kind of proof, such as a written promise of marriage, or an oath sworn before witnesses.
c. Marriages 'by habit and repute' were also legal if a couple usually presented themselves in public as husband and wife, even if no formal declaration of marriage was made.
Irregular marriages were frowned on by law and the churches, and couples who admitted to them were fined, but they had the same inheritance rights as regularly married couples, and their children were legitimate. Although the Church of Scotland did not approve of irregular marriages, it tolerated them because it feared that if the law did not recognize such relationships, the couple would end up 'living in sin.' The system was believed to protect women from unscrupulous men who might seduce them with promises of marriage or fake wedding ceremonies. After registration was introduced, an irregular marriage could be registered if the couple presented themselves before a sheriff or magistrate, were 'convicted' as parties to an irregular marriage, and paid a fine. Some found marriage by sheriff's warrant a cheaper and quicker alternative than all the expense of banns and a regular marriage ceremony. Marriages established in court by a Decree of Declarator could also be registered, on production to the registrar of an extract of the Decree and payment of £1, but this was not common. In fact, irregular marriages were infrequent in Scotland in the mid-nineteenth century, and fewer than 100 per year took place between 1855 and 1870. After that, the numbers rose steadily, and then rapidly in the early twentieth century, until they accounted for over 12% of all Scottish marriages in 1914. They remained at this level until the Second World War. Contrary to the national myth, most took place not on the Scottish border, but in the larger towns. This may have been due to a decline in the influence of the churches, or to the relative cheapness of irregular marriages, but it also reflected the growing number of divorces. Since many churches would not remarry a divorced person, and there was no civil marriage in Scotland until 1939, couples in this position had no alternative but to marry by sheriff's warrant. From 1916, irregular marriages were no longer technically an offence, and in 1939 marriage by sheriff's warrant ended, to be replaced by a civil ceremony in the registrar's office.

An elegant horse drawn Landau outside Campbell's Steamboat Tavern in 1904.
Wheels around Kirkcaldy and East Fife by Alan Brotchie.
Product Description
Until coal mining came to the fore in the nineteenth century, Eastern Fife was something of a transportation backwater. The first wooden railed wagon-ways in the kingdom were constructed in the late 18th century to carry coal in horse-drawn wagons from Fife's inland mines to the coastal distribution ports. The first main rail line opened in 1847 and until the mid-twentieth century, the area was quite well served. Road transport however, was slow to expand and even today the region has no motorway service and just one dual carriage way, built in the 1980s. Local transport solutions however have often been innovative! This photograph collection includes a De Havilland Rapide Dragon 1 six-seater taking off from Pettycur beach in June of 1933 for the Isle of Man TT races, a Mann's steam lorry at the Kirkcaldy Links Market in the 1920s and an elegant horse drawn Landau outside Campbell's Steamboat Tavern in 1904.

BETTING IN PUBLIC-HOUSES
Buckhaven Magistrates Take
a Serious view of It.
Several License-Holders Warned.
An adjourned meeting of Buckhaven Licensing Court was held to-day in order to consider live cases reported upon by the Chief Constable.
During the past year Provost Smart saidmthere had been an unprecedented number of convictions against license-holders.
Slackness had crept in, and immediate and radical improvement would have to take place in the conducting of Licensed premises. The
Magistrates took a view of betting in public-houses, and any further conviction would be followed by drastic action. They also viewed domino tournaments with extreme disfavour, and strongly recommended discontinuance of the practice.
Richard O'Donnell. jun., Empire Bar, Methil, did not appear to be a very suitable person, and the Magistrates would grant the licence after advising him to take the first opportunity to dispose of the place.
John Farmer, White Swan Hotel, Denbeath, they regarded as a very good man,to carry on hotel business. His license would be renewed, but be would have to understand he was responsible for his servants, and would have to see that there was no recurrence of betting offences.
Andrew Martin. Anchorage Bar, Methil, was in the opinion of the Court, absolutely unsuited to the trade, and the application would only be granted provided a guarantee was given that the place would be sold before the next Court. The Applicant accepted the decision.
Andrew Leitch Steamboat Tavern, Methil, would also be given the license, but no repetition of betting offences would be tolerated.
David Frew, Kirkcaldy who applied for a transfer of the license held for the Auld Hoose, Innerleven, would not agree to the closing of the back door, objected to by the Chief Constable. and the license was renewed to Mrs Margaret McLean, the present holder, on her, agreeing to keep the back door solely for private use.

SEAMAN'S FRAUD
IN FIFE PUB.
A seaman who defrauded a Methil pub-
lican was sentenced at Cupar Sheriff Court

169 Honeysuckle Road, Southampton, and
he pleaded guilty to having. on December
29, failed, without reasonable cause, to join
a ship to which he had engaged himself, and
(2) on the same date to having induced
Andrew Leitch, publican, Dock Tavern.
Methil, to cash a seaman's advance note for
£5 and subsequently failed to sail with the
vessel in respect of which the note had been
issued.
An agent said accused had got drunk and
failed to join his ship. There was no intention to defraud.
He had just returned to this after
a three months' voyage on another ship and

TWO YOUNG MEN SENT TO PRISON
Stole Money, Liquor and Cigarettes
The story ot the theft of money. liquor. and cigarettes from a public-house in Methil
was told before Sheriff Dudley Stuart at Cupar to-day when two young Methil men appeared on theft charges. Accused were John Wilson (24). miner, 15 Harbour Wynd. .Methil; and Thomas Inglis Gardner, dock labourer, 10 Harbour Wynd, Methill.
Both were sent to prison for thirty davs.
The charge. which they admitted, was that between 8th and 9th July. while acting
in consort, thev broke into the Dock Tavern Public House, Main Street, Methil occupied by Andrew Leitch, Publican, and stole £16 4s in money, four bottles of whisky, and ten packets of cigarettes.
On behalf of WiIson, Mr David S. Shaw, solicitor. Cupar. said that he had purchased a
quantity of red biddy from Leitch’s public-house. The quantity he had, went to his
head.
About two or three o'clock in the morning, along with the other accused, he went
to the back of the public-house and opened a window. It had no snib.
Neither were clear about what they did, but they took £16 of money. They hid it and
later showed the Police where it was hidden. The effect of this drink appeared
to have been rather severe.
On behalf of Gardner. Mr H. Buddo Middleton. Methil, said Gardner had returned
home from Methil where he was employed on a trawler. He was invited to come out and have a drink.
Foolishly ho did go out “and the high class liquor they had been drinking was red
Biddy, a concoction of methylated spirits and cheap port wine."
He had never been in trouble before.
Mr A. S. McNicol. the depute fiscal, pointed out that the police found that entrance had been obtained by moving the upper sash to make the snib break off. Although the money had been recovered there was no trace of either the whisky or the cigarettes
Sheriff Dudley Stuart imposed the sentence as stated.
