With this site you can explore your own Dunsire ancestry, and contribute your own family tree if it is not here, or bring it up to date if it is.

DRIVER J HARROWER 14350315
Six weeks training at Fort George then posted to 156 RAC (HLI) at Fornam Park Camp, Bury St Edmonds. Sent on driving course to London where I passed driving test.
First met Jim Lowe (Cpl MOT) when posted to Wantisden Camp at Butley (nr Ipswich). Second in command then "Capt Bob Salmond". We were designated then "87 Assault Sqn R.E" complete with 12 Churchill tanks. Jim was in "A" Troop where I was a driver. Got all kitted up there for second frontto come. Some weeks there organising — then moved out to "Aldburgh" on the coast. Billeted in a huge building opposite golf course. Hard training every day — living rough on the battle area at "Orford Ness". This was a huge area where all the civilians had been turfed out. All their crofts abandoned. Trained there for a week then back to Aldburgh. June 6th came, we were on reserve for Normandy, back to Wantisden. Jim and me home on leave. Went to cinema in Ipswich (film Sahara) before catching train home.
Later in month now, whole squadron by road to Eastbourne. Something wrong with my truck on way down. Consulted Corporal Lowe after limping in. Crown wheel gone in the diff was the trouble. We had to waterproof all our vehicles for going over so no time for repair. I was sent up to Sevenoaks next day to pick up new truck. Two days practice on steep mound of earth — signify steep ramp on TLS. Jim helps me along with this bit. While at Eastbourne flying bomb came down and demolished the guard room (empty at the time). Leaving Eastbourne next day for Gosport and TLS having got Mae West and French money issued. Put in roadside camp for two days and not allowed out. Two days later lined up on road to docks. Field postcards issued to every man to be sent home. Civilians out with cups of tea etc. (forgot, went to South Wales night battle training earlier in month).
Evening, loading on to "tank landing ship" — tanks below trucks on deck. MT Cpls (Jim) and Sgts (Welford) supervising chaining vehicles to deck for night crossing to Normandy. (Not much sleep that night). French coast ahead in morning. Mulberry in place off town of Arromanch. What a sight. Drove in to Arromanch over "Gold" beach across square, up steep hill back of houses to high ground looking down on town at left side. (Squaddies started to build POW storage on beach). Spent night there then set off through Bayeaux on Caen road. Pulled in to an orchard field but only stayed two hours. "A" Troop called on to link up with French Canadian regiment outside Caen at Mondeville. What a tough bunch (Mohawk haircuts) — armed to the teeth. Supported them in the next action with our tanks. Always with Canadians now on road to cross river Orne. Jim and I watching 800 Lancaster bombers raid on German positions when bombs started to fall on our field. "Under thenearest truck" he shouts. It was the ammo wagon. However, we were 0K but many killed in next field — Polish company. On now towards Falaise. Jim and I remember Village of Rorgancourt particularly. Houses abandoned — looters at work. Falaise, the killing ground for the German army and the never forgotten smell of the dead quite something. (Normandy over).
Still with Canadians crossed the River Seine at Elbeuf. On the other side I took bad with dysentery. Lay days in a trailer. Looked after well by Cpl Lowe. Days later packed straw in trucks to take high explosive to flame throwing tanks some miles away. Trucks fly red flag and big notice "Danger High Explosive". Bit tricky!
On up to Channel ports now. Jack and I on the eggs round (Jack & Jim and I fed well). Bologne taken soon after we left Cap Gris Nez. Murphy's commander gets MM at battle for city. Capt Crickmay k.i.a. here.
Squadron up in South Baveland with Canadian ISt Army. Near winter now it feels. Back to Ostend and Walcheren Island where we lost six tanks. Thenback to cold Holland again with Canadians living in barns if lucky. If not, out in pouring rain. Good news, told we are to have civvy billets in town of Weert in order to carry out maintenance on vehicles. November now. No 62 Biest is our house (Teunissen family). Jim and Jack in front room down stairs. Six of us at rear. Nice family and we enjoyed our stay here. Off again to Eersel only 15 miles away. I go back often at nights on Whitemans motorbike. Christmas day was in Company football team, Scotland -v- England drew 1-1.
I played Outside Right. Off once more down at Mechelen near Maastricht on the River Maas. Very
cold now. Billeted in school. Jim and Jack in civvy house. Two troops on River Maas crossing up to the Rhine now at Wesel. Germany in a bad way now — nearing end. Part of the Sqn is up in North end of Germany. Rest of us going back to Oosterloo in Belgium to change tanks to "tank Dozers". These were to be used to clear rubble in streets of big German cities. Billeted in school for young ladies. Jim has M. T. office in August's café — ideal!
Get good runs from Jim up into Germany again. War coming to an end soon. All German towns showing white flags out of windows. On way back to Oosterloo one day when heard war over. Got into Holland at Weert that night. What a reception. My mate and I got back to Oosterloo next day. Jim went to Gheel to see about hearing war all over in Germany now. Hamburg, Verdun, Hamlyn, Velzen before Luneburg. Sqn starts to break up now. Older ones, including Jim, posted now awaiting demob at Luneburg Barracks. Next time I saw your dad, John, was at Eagle Road.
