THE LATE MR GEORGE HARROWER. -The death occurred, suddenly, at his home in Allars Crescent on Saturday of Mr George L. Harrower, baker. Mr Harrower had been confined to bed for some weeks, but his end was unexpected, and great sympathy will be felt for his widow and family. Deceased was a keen runner in his younger days, and competed at numerous sports gatherings, including Powderhall. His favourite distances were the sprint and the half-mile, and his love of healthy outdoor sport is inherited by his two sons, George and John, both of whom are members of the Teviotdale Harriers Club. George was one mile champion of the Club four years in succession - from 1926 to 1929. John annexed the championship in 1932, and retained it last year. Both lads owed much to the expert advice of their father, who not only assisted them in their training, but took keen practical interest in their running, and acted as their second at many local athletic gatherings. Deceased was employed by Mr J. Houston, baker, Sourtree Place, and was held in high esteem by his fellow-employees and a wide circle of friends.

      Hawick Express - Thursday 30 June 1932

Teviotdale Harriers' Sports. Mile Championship Changes hands: Fast Times.
Teviotdale Harriers were so often disappointed with the weather served out to them at their evening meetings last season that the doleful confidently expected Friday's venture to take place in a deluge. As a matter of fact, rain threatened several times during the day, but fortunately enough it did not mature.
The programme, which comprised twelve events, attracted a large number of local and Border competitors, and was carried through very expeditiously.
The size of the crowd, too, was eminently satisfactory, though it is regrettable from the promoters' point of view that there were so many gratis spectators on the New Road and in the Park. Such excellent fare was surely worthy of the moderate admission fees.
The 100 yards handicap for youths was won in good style by the scratch man, T. Adams, of Gala Harriers, though R. W. Richardson, of Teviotdale, ran him pretty close. Five runners turned out for time mile club championship, including the holder, George Harrower. The race devolved into an exciting duel between the holder and his younger brother, John, the ultimate winner. The new champion is still under 18 years of age, and followed up his success in the mile by winning the half-mile handicap for youths.
      R. E. Scott, J. M. Richardson, and J. L. Redpath, all of Teviotdale, were first, second, and third respectively in the open hundred.
There was a field of 20 in the open half mile, which was won by A. Laidlaw of Gala Harriers and Duns. G. P. Turnbull and A. Valentine of Teviotdale were second and third.
Laidlaw registered a further success by winning the mile handicap, in which there were ten runners. W. A. P. Sanderson. of Gala Harriers, the back-marker, finished fourth.
The two-twenty was a thrilling affair, and a great triumph for Teviotdale men, all "outside" competitors, including H. R. Waters and E. Munro of Selkirk, being eliminated in the heats. J. M. Richardson, an older brother of " R. W.," was a worthy winner, his finish being magnificent.
There were two cycle races— a quarter-mile and a mile. The shorter event was won by G. T. Houliston, G. H. F. Turner of Gala being second, and James Scott third.
      W. Storrie bad a nasty spill in one of the mile heats, but escaped unhurt. A neck and neck race between the scratch man, R. Dodds of Tweedside C.C. and R. Cowburgh of Gala, characterised the third and last heat in the mile. The former shot ahead in the last lap, but thereafter slowed up and was beaten on the tape by Cowburgh. A. Murray and E. Macallan set a hot pace in the final, but the former conserved the lead which he gained in the second last lap, and won what must have been a gruelling race.
The 80 yards race for ladies resulted in a popular victory for Jean Reid.
Variety was lent to the programme with a putting the shot handicap. R. A. Foster (scratch) was the winner with a hefty throw of 34 feet 8 inches. Mr Tom Gillies then called on Miss Emily Graham to present the prizes.
The following were the officials: — Captain of Ring, Mr Adam Turnbull; Vice-Captain of Ring, Mr T. Gillies; Judges—Messrs J. M. Ballantyne, W. F. Ellis, and G. R. Innate, Hawick; and W.
