June 20, 1565: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I of England sent her cousin Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox (Henry VIII's niece via his sister Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland) to the Tower of London after the betrothal of Mary, Queen of Scots and Lady Margaret's son Lord Darnley was announced. As they were both great-grandchildren of King Henry VII of England, the union of Queen Mary and Lord Darnley further strengthened the Scots Queen's claim to the English throne. The marriage ended up a disaster for both Mary and Darnley, but did pave a smooth path for the accession of their son James in 1603 after Queen Elizabeth died.
Lady Lennox was released from the Tower following Lord Darnley's murder in 1567.
