He was Captain of the Berkeley Regiment in 1775. His company was in service with the First Continental Line July 20, 1778. He was a prisoner of the British in Charleston in 1780 after serving under General Moultrie May 16, 1779. He served until the end of the war and, while a Major, served on General Washington's staff. It is unknown when his Majority was granted. He inherited "Hillsborough" plantation through his mother, Sarah Hill Lining, who inherited the land from her mother Elizabeth Godfrey Hill, granddaughter of the original (1699) land grant owner, Colonel John Godfrey. "Hillsborough" was sold to Thomas Rose in 1834. NOTE: Information on Major Lining and his descendants, down through Dr. Thomas Lining and his children, came from the family bible. It should be considered accurate.
