M.D. Studied at Leydon University. Came from Scotland in 1730. He lived on the N.W. corner of King and Broad Sts. This house has been restored. Dr Lining sold the home on Broad St. in 1756 and moved to Hillsboro Plantation after the death of his mother-in-law. He was the first known recorder of daily instrumental weather observations, from January, 1738 to February, 1753. He was a contemporary of Benjamin Franklin, with whom he had considerable correspondence on various scientific matters. At 6:30 a.m., 3 p.m., and 10 p.m. daily he made observations and recorded temperature, rainfall, barometric pressure, humidity, wind direction and force, and the state of the weather. He also published the first accurate history of the Yellow Fever.
