James inherited from his father, Quiet Corner, where his father evidently had built a house and lived, and the 240 acres on the Stono. He also obtained an additional 500 acres on Wadmalaw on Bohicket Creek "to build and plant and use as his own" and and additional 250 acres on the Stono River. During the Yemassee War, about 100 men occupied (8/1715 - 3/1716) a fort on this property known as Fort LaRoche (Rivers, 5) in order to guard "James LaRoche's bridge connecting Wadmalaw and John's islands" (Ivers, 10). The fort was never tested in battle and fell into disrepair after peace was restore d (Jordan, 78-79).
