James Bingham “Bing” Kittrell, Jr., 80, died on Nov. 1, 2011. He was born on March 2, 1931 in Lexington, KY, the son of the late Marie Warren Beckner Kittrell and James Bingham Kittrell.
He attended Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee and graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington, KY. He then attended the University of Kentucky and Murray State College (also Kentucky). He is the author of Thumbnail Sketches of Old Lexington (Ky.) Today.
A survivor of Pork Chop Hill in the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1955. Later he served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Survivors include two children, Helen Marie Kittrell Humphriss, Florida, and Elizabeth Kristine Kittrell Reynolds, Minnesota. There are five grandchildren, Brent, Mary, Vicki, Lynn and Kai, and four great grandsons. Additional family members include two sisters, Marie Kittrell Lynn (Ron) and Lucy Kittrell Combs (Myron), one niece, Michelle Hunter Combs Nealy, two nephews, Lucien Curtis Lynn and William Warren Lynn, and one grandnephew and niece.
Arrangements through Milward’s, Broadway. Visitation Fri., Nov. 4, 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Service conducted by Reverend Patrick C. Fitzsimons of St. Luke Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the KY Wounded Warriors % Bluegrass Military Affairs Coalition, 128 East Reynolds Rd., Lexington, KY 40517.
